COMMON COLD / FLU / CORYZA

Flu, also called influenza is caused by a virus and is an infection of the nose, throat and lungs, which are part of the respiratory system.

Most common and most frequent, highly contagious viral infection affecting all age groups, specially, school children. The elderly and immune-compromised individuals.

Common Cold is an acute disease of the upper respiratory tract that is marked by inflammation of the mucous membranes of the nose, throat, eyes and with one major symptom i.e. mucous congestion.

Influenza, commonly called the flu, occurs in the form of a worldwide epidemic every winter.

A common cold is a viral infection and antibiotics may not work.

It normally lasts up to ten days; however, some symptoms do stay as long as three weeks.

Often, adults may have two or three colds each year while Infants and young children may have colds more often.

A more serious condition pneumonia can develop as a complication of influenza, especially in seniors.

CAUSES

  • Inhalation of droplets from infected people through cough and sneeze.
  • Cold or changing weather (mostly in winter or fall)
  • Weaker immune system
  • Low resistance due to fatigue, exhaustion, loss of sleep, stress, depression.
  • Unhygienic practices.

DIETARY MANAGEMENT

For wind cold

  • Warming and dispersing foods are encouraged to promote perspiration and expel the pathogen. These include ginger, garlic, mustard greens and seeds, grapefruit peel, cilantro, parsnips, scallions, basil, and cinnamon.
  • Eat as little as possible so as not to burden the immune system, and drink plenty of warm fluids such as soups, porridges, and tea.

For wind heat

  • Cooling, soothing, and heat-clearing foods are best. Favor fresh fruits and vegetables like cabbage, burdock root, cilantro, dandelion, mint, chrysanthemum flowers, apples, pears, and bitter melon.
  • Drink plenty of room temperature water or tea.

For both wind cold and wind heat, avoid overeating.

Avoid heavy, rich, greasy foods and meats and shellfish.

  • In case of profuse water nasal discharge fluid intake should be increased.
  • Drink plenty of water, can add a pinch of turmeric and ginger powder to it.
  • You can consume juices especially of citrus fruits as they have high vitamin C content – lemon, orange, sweet lime, pineapple etc.
  • Consume hot soups, especially chicken soup.
  • Take raw fruits and vegetables. Apple is good for cold, should consume at least one apple a day.
  • Include garlic, ginger and onions in your food.
  • Increase intake of vitamin A in your diet – all yellow fruits and vegetables contain Vitamin A. Meat, fish, kidney and liver, liver oils of fishlike cod and halibut are richest source of vitamin A. If you are a vegetarian, you can have fish liver oil supplements but avoid over dosing.
  • Boil a mixture of Bishops weed (Ajwain), tea leaves and water and inhale the steam, helps to decongest the nose block due to cold. Should do at least three times a day.
  • Drink boiled mixture of – 1/2 cup water, little ginger, 2-3 leaves of sweet basil (tulsi) and mint leaves, or you can eat the raw leaves, this will boost up your immunity and control your cough and cold.
  • Gargle with warm water, a pinch of salt and turmeric to sooth your throat.
  • Get plenty of sleep / bed rest, it is important to get as much as possible when infected as the body’s immune system is fighting off the virus.
  • Go out for a walk-in fresh air.
  • Do not self-medicate!

AVOID

  • Milk and milk products – cottage cheese.
  • Spicy food, eggs, sweets and cold refrigerated drinks – cold water, ice creams and aerated drinks.
  • All food with preservatives and additives.
  • Excessive activity, straining, and overeating.
  • Alcohol, smoking, and caffeine, which adversely affect energy and immunity.
  • Contact with infected people.
