Genital warts are viral infections of the skin or mucous membranes – moist tissues of genital area – and one of the most common types of sexually transmitted infections.
Genital warts can show up weeks or even months after sexual contact with a person infected.
That person may not know he or she is infected and is responsible for HPV transmission, making it hard to know when first became infected.
The virus that causes these warts is called HPV (human papillomavirus).
HPV is a group of more than 150 related viruses. There are more than 40 HPV types that can infect the genital areas of males and females – nearly 1 one in 4 are currently infected.
Some types of genital HPV infections may lead to various cancers including cervical cancer and cancer of the vulva, vagina, anus, shaft of the penis, scrotum or oropharynx – back of the throat, including the base of the tongue and tonsils.
Pregnancy, warts on the vulva or in the vagina can become larger that may bleed when stretched during delivery and this makes it hard to urinate too.
