Iritis also known as uveitis is the inflammation and irritation of the iris which is a part of the eye that regulates the amount of light that enters the eye.
The uvea is the middle layer of the eye between the retina and the white part of the eye. The iris is in the front portion (anterior) of the uvea. Uveitis is inflammation of part of or all of the uvea.
Iritis can occur in one or both eyes. It usually develops suddenly
If untreated, iritis could lead to glaucoma or vision loss.
Signs & Symptoms
- Discomfort or achiness in the affected eye
- Neuralgic pain in the eye radiating along the other branches of the 5th cranial nerve.
- This pain is worse at night.
- Blurring of the vision.
- Lachrymation – watery eyes
- Iris becomes muddy.
- Small irregular sluggish pupils
- Congestion in the eyes.
- Eye redness
- Photophobia – Sensitivity to light

Common causes & Risk factors
The cause is often unknown. Some of the possible factors may include:
- Genetic factor.
- Penetrating or blunt injuries or trauma
- A burn from a chemical or fire
- Corneal ulcer
- Scleritis
- Herpetic infection – Viral infections on your face, such as cold sores and shingles caused by herpes viruses
- Malignant tumors inside the eye ball
- Cellulitis
- Allergy- can be bacterial, tubercular, syphilitic.
- Protozoal infection like toxoplasmosis.
- Viral infections
- Gonorrhoea
- Systemic causes like rheumatism, gout, diabetes, sarcoidosis, ankylosing spondylosis, septicaemic condition, reactive arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease and psoriatic arthritis.
- Weakened immune system or an autoimmune disorder.
- Smoke tobacco.
- Use of certain medications such as the antibiotic rifabutin and the antiviral medication cidofovir, that are used to treat HIV infections.
