The conjunctiva can’t absorb blood very quickly, so the blood gets trapped. The broken blood vessel in the eye look alarming, but it’s usually harmless.
The condition often occurs without any apparent cause. Even a strong sneeze or cough can cause a blood vessel to break in the eye.

- Scratchy feeling on the surface of the eye
- Usually, no pain and no effect on eyesight.
