The conjunctiva is a thin, transparent membrane that covers white of the eye (the sclera) and the inside of the eyelid.

A subconjunctival haemorrhage is a bleed underneath the conjunctiva that occurs when a tiny blood vessel breaks – like a bruise on the skin.

The conjunctiva can’t absorb blood very quickly, so the blood gets trapped. The broken blood vessel in the eye look alarming, but it’s usually harmless.

The condition often occurs without any apparent cause. Even a strong sneeze or cough can cause a blood vessel to break in the eye.

 

Common Symptoms

  • A sudden appearance of a bright red patch or a spot on the white of the eye.
  • Scratchy feeling on the surface of the eye
  • Usually, no pain and no effect on eyesight.

 

Possible Causes

  • Bleeding is caused by the leaking of a blood vessel in the conjunctiva, maybe due to;
  • Violent coughing, vomiting, sneezing or straining.
  • Or maybe due to an eye injury, including:
  • Roughly rubbing the eyes or a foreign object in the eye
  • Trauma injuring the eyes
