You may experience dry eyes in certain situations, such as on an airplane, in an air-conditioned room, while riding a bike or after looking at a computer screen for a few hours.

Possible causes of dry eyes.

Problems with the any of the 3 layers of the tear film keeps the surface of your eyes lubricated, smooth and clear.

Tear film dysfunction maybe due hormone changes, autoimmune disease, inflamed eyelid glands or allergic eye disease.

Dry eyes may occur due to poor-quality tears and if you don’t produce enough tears.

Common causes of decreased tear production include:

  • Aging
  • Certain medical conditions including Sjogren’s syndrome, sarcoidosis, thyroid disorders etc.
  • Use of certain medicines, including antihistamines, decongestants, hormone replacement therapy, antidepressants, and medicines for high blood pressure, acne, birth control and Parkinson’s disease
  • Corneal nerve de-sensitivity caused by contact lens use, nerve damage or laser eye surgery
  • Increased tear evaporation
  • Blinking less often, which tends to occur with certain conditions, such as Parkinson’s disease; or when you’re concentrating during certain activities, such as while reading, driving or working at a computer
  • Eyelid problems, such as the lids turning outward (ectropion) and the lids turning inward (entropion)
  • Eye allergies
  • Preservatives in topical eye drops
  • Wind, smoke or dry air
  • Vitamin A deficiency

Risk factors

  • Dry eyes are more common in people over 50.
  • Being a woman, especially if they experience hormonal changes due to pregnancy, using birth control pills or menopause.
  • Eating a diet that is low in vitamin A, or low in omega-3 fatty acids.

DO’S & DONT’S

  • Do not overstrain the eyes
  • Give your eyes periodic rest especially when reading or working on computers. Do not spend move than 2 hours in front of the screen.
  • Blink your eyes consciously every few hours. This washes off any dust or dirt particles & keeps eye ball moist. It it healthy to cry – for eyes, lungs & mind.
  • Do not touch the eyes with dirty fingers.
  • Wash eyes regularly with clean cold water every night.
  • Exercise the eye muscles by practicing accommodation exercises.
  • Natural light is good for eyes.
  • Rest your eyes while watching television by palming i.e. rub both hands, than gently place the palms (not fingers) over the eyes without any pressure.
  • While reading or writing the light should come from your left side.
  • Use glasses/glares while in sun or riding or working in dusty smoky atmospheres.
  • There should be sufficient light when watching T.V. at night.

  • A nutritious diet consisting of carrots, green leafy vegetables and salads.
  • Cut thin slices of fresh cucumber and place them on the eyes in case of eyestrain.
