Description

Gallbladder is a pear-shaped organ, and its main function is to store bile (a digestive juice) produced by the liver and to release it on an as-needed basis for digestive purposes.

The gallbladder is located in the upper right quadrant of the abdomen, just below the liver.

Gallstones are small, hard crystal-like deposits form in the gallbladder or the bile duct.

They may occur as one large stone or many small ones that may vary in size – as large as a golf ball or as small as a grain of sand.

The formation of gallstones is a complex process that starts with bile, a fluid composed mostly of water, bile salts, lecithin and cholesterol.

Normally, bile contains enough chemicals to dissolve the cholesterol excreted by your liver. But if your liver excretes more cholesterol than your bile can dissolve, the excess cholesterol may form into crystals and eventually into stones.

There are three types of gall stones.

Types of gallstones

  1. Cholesterol gallstones. The most common type – often appears yellow in colour.
  2. Pigment gallstones – dark brown or black stones form when your bile contains too much bilirubin – is an end-product produced when your body breaks down red blood cells.
  3. Mixed stones, i.e. pigment & cholesterol Bile is made up mainly of cholesterol and Bile acids.
