Why is Testosterone important?
Testosterone, a sex hormone, plays important roles particularly for men, it regulates:
- Sex drive (libido)
- Sperm production
- Fat distribution
- Muscle mass and strength
- Bone mass / density
- Sense of well being
- Production of red blood cells and sperm.
It also plays a key role in the development of male reproductive tissues such as testes and prostate, as well as promoting secondary sexual characteristics such as body hair etc.
Testosterone is produced by the gonads (by the testes in men and in women by their ovaries, adrenal glands, fat cells, and skin cells), although small quantities are also produced by the adrenal glands in both sexes.
The testosterone level varies by age it peaks at 17-18 years and gradually declines throughout adulthood – about 1 percent a year after age 30 on average.
Male (in ng/dl)
17 to 18 years 300-1,200
19 years & older 240-950
Male hypogonadism is a condition in which the body doesn’t produce enough sperm or hormone (testosterone) that play a key role in masculine growth and development during puberty.
Sexual stimulation and sexual activity cause testosterone levels to rise. Testosterone levels can drop during a long period of sexual inactivity.
The male reproductive system makes, stores and moves sperm. Testicles produce sperm. Fluid from the seminal vesicles and prostate gland combine with sperm to make semen. The penis ejaculates semen during sexual intercourse.
Most men naturally lose testosterone (male hypogonadism) as they grow older and may develop these symptoms.
- Low of libido
- Difficult to get or maintain erections (erectile dysfunction)
- Alopecia – Hair loss
- A reduction in the size of their testicles (shrinkage), scrotum may also feel softer than usual.
- Reduced levels of semen
- Infertility – trouble with fertility
- Fatigue, lack of energy
- A decrease in haemoglobin causing anaemia
- Thinning of the bones (osteoporosis)
- Increased body fat
- Male breast development (gynecomastia)
- Excessive growth of the arms and legs as compared to the trunk of the body
- Mental and emotional changes.
- Depression & mood changes
- Difficulty concentrating
- Hot flashes
If the body doesn’t produce enough testosterone during fetal development, it can cause impaired growth of the external sex organs, a child who is genetically male may be born with:
- Female genitals
- Genitals that are neither clearly male nor clearly female (ambiguous genitals)
- Underdeveloped male genitals
Male hypogonadism can delay puberty or cause incomplete or lack of normal development. It can hamper:
- Development of muscle mass
- Voice deepening
- Growth of body and facial hair
- Growth of the penis and testicles
Men with high testosterone can experience a variety of troubling symptoms and possible health consequences. Excess testosterone can lead to more aggressive and irritable behaviour, more acne and oily skin, even worse sleep apnoea (if you already have it), and an increase in muscle mass.
There are many potential causes of low testosterone, including:
- Injury, trauma (head injury)
- Interrupted blood supply to the testes or infection of the testes (orchitis).
- Chemotherapy for cancer
- Too much iron in the body
- Dysfunction or tumours of the pituitary gland
- Use of certain medications, including opioids, hormones used to treat prostate cancer, and steroids (such as prednisone)
- Acute (short-term) or chronic (long-term) illness
- Alcohol abuse
- Cirrhosis of the liver
- Chronic renal (kidney) failure
- HIV/AIDS
- A genetic condition in which a male is born with an extra copy of the X chromosome.
- High levels of the milk-producing hormone prolactin
- Obesity or extreme weight loss
- Uncontrolled type 2 diabetes mellitus
- Congenital defect (present at birth)
- Obstructive sleep apnea
- Estrogen excess
- Previous anabolic steroid abuse
- Severe primary hypothyroidism
- Pubertal delay
- Radiation exposure or prior surgery of the brain
- A mumps infection involving the testicles that occurs during adolescence or adulthood can damage the testicles, affecting the function of the testicles and testosterone production.
The hypothalamus produces gonadotropin-releasing hormone, which signals the pituitary gland to make follicle-stimulating hormone (follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH)) and luteinizing hormone (luteinizing hormone (LH)). Luteinizing hormone then signals the testes to produce testosterone.
How can one boost testosterone naturally?
Avoid Certain foods that lower testosterone by increasing the activity of an enzyme, aromatase, which converts testosterone into oestrogen.
They include cheese, yogurt, grains (bread, pasta, crackers, rice, cereals), chocolate, and alcohol.
- Making sleep a priority will help maintain testosterone levels. People should aim to sleep at least 7 to 8 hours each night.
- Fasting regularly helps boosts testosterone levels.
- Avoid stress since it elevates the hormone cortisol which in turn negatively impacts testosterone.
