Rhinitis is an inflammation of the membranes inside the nose.
Mostly irritants or allergens can cause such inflammation, but there are times when there’s no specific cause or allergies etc responsible for these inflammations and this condition is known as idiopathic, vasomotor or non-allergic rhinitis.
The symptoms may be like those of hay fever – allergic rhinitis, but no allergies involved.
Non-allergic rhinitis can also be a symptom of another condition, such as polyps, a DNS – deviated nasal septum, or granulomatosis with polyangiitis.
It affects children as well as adults, but it’s more common after age 20 and can remain a life-ling problem that comes and goes round the year.
Possible Causes or Risk factors
The exact cause of nonallergic rhinitis is unknown, and factors that trigger the symptoms vary from person to person.
Non-rhinitis occurs when the blood vessels inside nose dilate or expand. Dilation of the vessels in the nose cause swelling and congestion.
- Irritants or pollution in the air – dust, smog, cigarette smoke and second-hand smoke
- Alcohol
- Spicy or hot foods or drinks
- Strong emotions
- Having a cold
- Changes in the weather, such as dry temperature or humidity that cause a runny or stuffy nose.
- Exercising
- Strong odors – perfumes, chemical and paint fumes
- Hormone changes in pregnancy or puberty, or from taking HRT’s – hormone replacement therapy and the contraceptive pills
- Certain medications such as ACE inhibitors, beta blockers, aspirin and anti-inflammatory painkillers like ibuprofen or drugs used to treat erectile dysfunction
- Viral infections e.g., those associated with a cold or flu
- Excessive use of decongestant nasal sprays
- Lying on your back while you sleep can trigger nonallergic rhinitis.
- Acid reflux that happens overnight.
- Long-term health problems – diabetes and hypothyroidism
Signs & Symptoms:
- Chronic, violent sneezing
- A stuffy (blocked) or drippy nose
- An itchy nose
- A reduced sense of smell
- Crusts to form inside the nose.
- Mucus in the throat – postnasal drip
- Chronic cough.
Nonallergic rhinitis most often doesn’t cause an itchy nose, itchy or watery eyes or throat, as these symptoms are linked with allergies such as hay fever.
