Optic neuritis is the swelling or inflammation of the optic nerve, damaged nerve fibers that can severely affect the colour vision or visual field and can cause short or long-term loss of vision.
Optic neuritis usually comes on suddenly and gets worse over a few days and reaches a peak about two weeks from onset.
The disease is divided into two types:
- Papillitis: when the optic nerve head is inflamed
- Retrobulbar neuritis: when the nerve behind the eyeball is affected.
Common symptoms of optic neuritis may include.
- Pain with the eye movement
- Slight pain in and around the orbit
- Temporary vision loss in one eye over an hour or a few hours
- Changes in the way the pupil reacts to bright light
- Loss of colour vision
- Blind spots or areas of poor vision.
- Retinal bleeding.
- Externally the eye appears normal
Possible Causes
The exact cause of optic neuritis is unknown and not always clear.
- Some septic conditions like tonsillitis and sinusitis or general febrile illness.
- Autoimmune diseases, including lupus, sarcoidosis, and Behçet disease, Cryptococcosis, a fungal infection
- Bacterial infections, including tuberculosis, syphilis, Lyme disease, and meningitis
- Viral infections, including viral encephalitis, measles, rubella, chickenpox, herpes zoster, mumps, and mononucleosis
- Respiratory infections, including mycoplasma pneumonia and other common upper respiratory tract infections
- Multiple sclerosis
- Diabetes
- Disseminated sclerosis (hardening of the tissue due to scarring after inflammation).
- Orbital cellulites (inflammation of the connective tissues between the adjacent tissue and organ).
Recurrent attacks may lead to optic atrophy.
