Description

Urinary problems particularly Urine infections are among the most common health issues affecting men and women of all age groups.

Women are more prone (about 30%) than men, as the length of their urethra is short and its orifices quite close to each other.

These infections are caused by organisms (pathogens) that are too small to be seen with naked eye e.g., fungi, viruses and bacteria.

Most bacterial infection are often treated with antibiotics, but the recurrence ration is common. Plus, the excessive use of antibiotics may interfere with the friendly bacteria in the gut.

Untreated, complicated and recurrent UTI’s can lead to:

  • Kidney damage
  • Urethral stricture (narrowing of the urethra caused due to injury, infection or instrumentation)

UTI is the infection anywhere in the urinary tract, below the kidneys.

The urinary system has several organs, including:

  • Ureters, which transport waste from the kidneys to the bladder.
  • Kidneys, which filter waste from your blood – Infection in the kidney is known as pyelonephritis.
  • Urinary Bladder, which holds urine – Infection in the urinary bladder is called cystitis.
  • Urethra, the opening in your genitals where you pass urine – an infection in the urethra is known as urethritis.

Presence of pus cells in urine is known as pyuria. (Passing a few pus cells in urine is normal). If passing too many pus cells in urine, it may indicate some sort of infection in the urinary tract.

Symptoms of Pus Cells in Urine include.

  • Pain / burning while urinating.
  • Frequent urination
  • Cloudy urine
  • A smell in urine
  • Lower abdomen pain and fever

Blood in urine is known as haematuria. (Blood in the urine may arise from a problem in any part of the urinary tract, including kidneys, ureter, urinary bladder and urethra.)

Various causes for blood in the urine are.

  • Infection in the urinary tract, cystitis, pyelonephritis or glomerulonephritis
  • Renal calculus (stone)
  • Prostatitis / prostate enlargement
  • Instrumentation of urinary tract
  • Trauma to the urinary tract
  • Certain medications

Natural, holistic remedies and dietetic recommendations.

Better foods options for UTI

  • Foods high in antioxidants, including leafy green veggies, berries, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, carrots, beets, green tea, cocoa, sea vegetables, etc.
  • High fiber foods, like avocados, berries, apples, pears, figs, artichokes, winter or acorn squash, flax seeds and chia seeds
  • Fresh herbs and spices like turmeric, ginger, basil, parsley or oregano, plus raw garlic and raw honey
  • Bone broth or protein powder made from bone broth/collagen

Drink plenty of water – Increasing your fluid intake is the most fundamental step in the treatment of UTIs.

You must drink a minimum of 8–10 glasses of water daily. Higher fluid intake will result in more urine production, making it easier for the body to expel the infection-causing bacteria from your system.
