Chromium may enhance effects of insulin or support the activity of pancreatic cells that produce insulin and cut cholesterol and triglyceride levels, whilst increasing HDL levels.
Foods high in chromium such as broccoli, raw cheese, green beans, and grass-fed beef etc., may help reduce fasting glucose levels particularly in type 2 diabetics and can improve glucose tolerance factor and naturally.
Many patients with diabetes are Vitamin B1 deficient and that may lead to certain diabetes complications such as fatigue, irritability, poor memory, loss of appetite, sleep disturbances, abdominal discomfort, weight loss and blood vessel damage etc.
Inositol may have a role to play in reversing the effects of diabetic neuropathy that is nerves damage caused by diabetes.
Alpha-lipoic acid is a potent antioxidant and taking it alongside prescription diabetes treatment may help decrease fasting blood sugar and A1C.
It may also:
- Protect against oxidative damage.
- Improve eyesight or vision.
- Improve neuropathic symptoms.
- And decrease fasting plasma glucose.
Caution: It needs to be taken with extra care under supervision of your GP, as it has the potential to lower blood sugar levels to dangerous levels.
- Magnesium is an essential nutrient found in many foods and may improve glucose levels and insulin sensitivity in those at risk.
- Probiotics contain beneficial friendly bacteria and offer several health benefits and may improve body’s handling of carbohydrates. Probiotics may decrease blood sugar by reducing inflammation and preventing the destruction of pancreatic cells that make insulin.
- Vitamins B6 and B12 may be effective in cases of severe damage to the nerves due to diabetes known as Neuropathy.
- Type 1 diabetics generally have low vitamin C levels. By adding Vitamin C the levels of sorbitol may be lowered.
- Sorbitol is a harmful sugar, and its presence may lead to increased risk of diabetic complications such as retinopathy, neuropathy and kidney damage etc.

- Zinc is considered an essential element in insulin metabolism, a powerful protector against viral infections and may act to protect beta cells from destruction.
- Type 1 diabetics are often zinc deficient, and supplements have been shown to lower blood sugar levels.
