A muscle strain also known as a pulled muscle is an injury to a muscle or a tendon — the fibrous tissue that connects muscles to bones, it occurs when a muscle is overstretched, explosive movements, twisted or torn.
Most common affected body parts include the lower back, hands, elbows, groin, calf, ankles, and in the muscles at the back of the thigh (hamstrings).
The difference between a strain and a sprain is that a strain involves an injury to a muscle or to the band of tissue that attaches a muscle to a bone, while a sprain injures the bands of tissue that connect two bones together.
Severe strains sometimes require surgical repair!
Common Symptoms vary, depending on the severity of the injury, but may include:
- Pain or tenderness, especially when contracting it
- Swelling or inflammation of the injured area
- Redness or bruising
- Limited motion or Difficulty moving
- Muscle weakness
- Muscle spasms
- Discoloration in the injured area
- A sensation of a pop or tear at the time of injury
- Numbness or tingling.
Possible Causes or Risk Factors

- Repetitive injuries by doing the same motion over and over.
- Games such as soccer, football, hockey, boxing and wrestling — can increase your risk of muscle strains.
- Poor flexibility of the body.
- Not warming up before exercising can increase the stress on muscles
- Beginning an intense exercise program too soon
- Being tired and resting your body
- Wearing shoes that don’t fit well, or high-heeled shoes can cause a strain
- Holding your neck or back in an awkward position for long periods
- Magnesium deficiency: Low levels of magnesium can cause muscles to feel stiff and tight, and can lead to cramps, spasms, and twitches
Self-care at home.
- Rest the strained muscle for at least a day
- Avoid activities that cause pain or make the strain worse
- Stop exercising and try not to put weight on the injured area
