Description

Cervical spondylosis is also called cervical osteoarthritis a general term for age-related wear and tear affecting the spinal disks – a condition involving changes to the bones, discs, and joints of the neck.

As the disks dehydrate and shrink, signs of osteoarthritis develop, including bony projections along the edges of bones (bone spurs)

Spondylitis is an inflammation of the vertebra – a form of spondylopathy. In many cases, spondylitis involves one or more vertebral joints as well, which itself is called spondylarthritis.

Common Symptoms

  • Cervical spondylosis most often causes neck pain and stiffness around neck.
  • It causes severe inflammation of the vertebrae that might eventually lead to chronic pain and disability.
  • Narrowing of the spinal canal within the bones of the spine (the vertebrae).
  • If the spinal cord or nerve roots become pinched, you might experience:
  • Tingling, numbness and weakness in the arms, hands, legs or feet
  • Lack of coordination and difficulty walking
  • Loss of bladder (frequent urination) or bowel control
  • Faintness/ sudden Black out
  • Loss of Function of Organs.

In more advanced cases, the inflammation can cause new bone to form on the spine. This may lead to deformity.

Possible Causes

  • Bone Spur – As with age, the disks break down, the body may produce extra amounts of bone in a misguided effort to strengthen the spine. These bone spurs can sometimes pinch the spinal cord and nerve roots.
  • Nerves Compression
  • Degenerative of Bones
  • Dehydrated Disc – Disks act like cushions between the vertebrae of the spine. By the age of 40, most people’s spinal disks begin drying out and shrinking that leads to bone-on-bone contact between the vertebrae.
  • Use of Smartphones – bending your head to look down at your smartphone can put up to 60 pounds of pressure on your spine (compared to 12 pounds when you’re standing up straight). This posture is not natural and the accumulation of the extra force can lead to irregular stresses on the spine and surrounding, supportive soft tissues
  • Herniated disks. Cracks also appear on the exterior of the spinal disks. The soft interior of a disk can squeeze through these cracks that may press on the spinal cord and nerve roots.
  • Stiff ligaments. Ligaments are cords of tissue that connect bone to bone. Spinal ligaments can stiffen with age, making the neck less flexible.

Arthritis is a chronic disease of bones or joints that cause inflammation, tenderness or swelling of a single or multiple joints, accompanied by stiffness and pain, which typically worsen with age.
