Common symptoms
- This condition may cause severe pain when you turn your wrist, grasp anything or make a fist.
- Pain in your wrist on the same side as your thumb (the radial side).
- Pain and swelling near the base of the thumb
- Difficulty moving the thumb and wrist.
- A “sticking” or “stop-and-go” sensation in the thumb when moving it
- Spreads (radiates) from your wrist into your thumb or forearm.
- Gets worse when you’re gripping or pinching objects.
- A snapping or popping feeling in your wrist when you move your thumb.
- Stiffness or your thumb feeling less smooth.
- Numbness in your wrist or thumb.
Possible causes of de Quervain’s tenosynovitis
The exact cause of de Quervain tenosynovitis isn’t known.
- Overusing or doing repetitive motions with your thumbs and wrist — such as working as a gardener, playing racket sports, or lifting a baby — can make it worse.
Anything that irritates your thumb tendons can cause de Quervain’s tenosynovitis.
- Inflammatory or rheumatoid arthritis.
- Direct injury to the wrist, thumb or tendon.
- Oedema or fluid retention, such as from changes in hormones during pregnancy
Activities that require repetitive motions
- Sports like tennis, racquetball or skiing.
- Using a hammer or other tools.
