Description

Uterine Polyps AKA endometrial polyps are the overgrowth of the endometrial lining of the womb or the uterus.

They usually stay contained within your uterus, but occasionally, they slip down through the opening of the uterus (cervix) into your vagina.

Their size varies from few millimetres (sesame seed size) to a few centimetres (golf ball size or even larger), and they can be single or multiple in number.

They can be sessile or pedunculated, the second ones being more common.

Sessile means they attach with the uterine cavity with a flat base, and pedunculated means they connect to the uterine cavity with a stalk.

Uterine polyps are usually noncancerous or benign but have a 5% chance of being malignant or turning malignant (precancerous polyps).

Chances of malignancy of uterine polyps are higher in postmenopausal women, although younger women can get them, too.

There are 4 types of polypi.

  • Mucous
  • Fibroid
  • Placental
  • Malignant

COMMON CAUSES & RISK FACTORS

The exact cause of uterine polyps is not clear, but hormonal factors appear to play a role.

Uterine polyps are oestrogen-sensitive, meaning they grow in response to excessive circulating oestrogen hormone.

Other factor may include:

  • It could arise by process of extension from the sub mucous fibroid [fibroid polypus]
  • Arises from the remnants of the placenta after abortion or childbirth over which there is deposition of organizing blood
    • Secondary to mucous and fibroid polypus
  • Being in perimenopausal or postmenopausal phase
  • Having high blood pressure (hypertension)
  • Being obese
  • Taking tamoxifen, a drug therapy for breast cancer
  • Taking HRT’s – Hormone replacement therapy
