Glomeruli is a network of tiny blood vessels in the kidneys and a nephron is a filtering unit in the kidney that removes waste from the blood and produces urine.
Glomerulonephritis is inflammation of those tiny filters (glomeruli) that can be a sudden (acute) or a gradual (chronic) condition and can lead to kidney failure if left untreated.
Glomerulonephritis can be primary that occurs on its own or secondary that is as part of another disease, such as lupus or diabetes.
Common Signs & Symptoms
They vary depending on whether you have acute or chronic state and the cause behind it.
- Foamy, bubbly or cloudy Urine – Albuminuria / proteinuria that is protein leaking in the urine
- Haematuria – Blood traces in the urine (pinkish, dark or cold coloured urine)
- Oedema – fluid retention that is swelling of your ankles, feet, hands, face or abdomen.
- Hypertension – high blood pressure
- Frequent nighttime urination
- Retention of urine – Urinating less than usual.
- Nausea and vomiting.
- Muscle cramps.
- Lethargy or fatigued
Possible Causes & Risk Factors
- Genetic or inherited.
- Post – infection glomerulonephritis – the acute type is often caused by a bacterial infection e.g., streptococcus (throat or skin infections, bacterial endocarditis) or other infections such as pneumococcus, hepatitis B & C, HIV, chickenpox, (varicella, a type of virus), malaria (a type of parasite) etc.
Children are more likely to develop post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis than are adults!
- Sudden type of glomerulonephritis can also be caused by other illnesses including auto Immune disorders (lupus) where your immune system attacks healthy cells instead.
- Glomerulonephritis can also be caused by drugs side effects including certain pain killers or analgesics such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), like ibuprofen and naproxen.
- Vasculitis (e.g., polyarteritis) is inflammation of blood vessels.
- Sclerotic conditions – some diseases or conditions such as hypertension and diabetic nephropathy, can cause scarring of the glomeruli that results in poor and declining kidney function.
- Glomerulonephritis is also linked with certain cancers, like stomach, lung cancer and chronic lymphocytic leukemia etc.
