Hallux Valgus or Bunion refers to a bony bump that forms on the joint at the base of your big toe on the outer side. At times, little bunions may form on the joint of little toe which are known as bunionettes.
It causes displacement or tilting of the affected big toe inwards – means the tip of your big toe to get pulled toward the smaller toes and forces the joint at the base of your big toe to stick out.
The signs and symptoms of a bunion may include:
- Redness, swelling and soreness of skin over the bunion.
- A bulging bump on the outside of the base of your big toe
- Corns or calluses or thickening of skin — these often develop where the first and second toes rub against each other
- Ongoing pain or pain that comes and goes
- Limited movement of your big toe
- Turning of big toe towards other toes of affected foot
- Numbness in big toe
- Fluid-filled eruptions (blisters) appear on the skin of great toe.
