Description

A hernia is a condition that develops due to a spot weakness in a muscle, through which an organ or tissue squeezes or bulges through.

There are different types of hernias that develop inside different parts of the body, causing an abnormal bulging of one area into another.

Muscles weakness & straining are the main causes.

Poor nutrition, over exertion, smoking, obesity are some of the factors which cause weakness of muscles.

Constipation, pregnancy and persistent coughing can also cause the condition worse.

A hiatal hernia is a condition when a part of the stomach pushes into the chest through an opening called the hiatus. The hiatus is part of the digestive system that connects the stomach to the oesophagus or the food pipe.

A hiatal or hiatus hernia forms inside the diaphragm, the muscular area that lays between the chest and the lower abdomen.

Hiatal hernia is common among those who also suffer from Crohn’s disease.

Middle to older-aged women (over 50 years old) develop hiatal hernias more than any other group.

Many people with a hiatal hernia have no idea because they never experience any noticeable symptoms, but if they do, here are some typical symptoms that could be mild to moderate:

  • Anemia
  • Heartburn or burning sensation
  • Acid reflux or GERD
  • Chest pain or abdominal pain.
  • Bitter taste in your mouth.
  • Waking up feeling like you’re choking or coughing in the middle of the night
  • Dry mouth
  • Gum irritation, including tenderness and bleeding
  • Halitosis – bad breath
  • Backward flow or regurgitation of acidic foods or sour liquid at the back of mouths / throats
  • Bloating after meals
  • Nausea
  • Bloody vomiting – a possible sign of damage in lining of oesophagus
  • Black stools
  • Belching, gassiness, burping and flatulence after meals
  • Feeling full soon after you eat.
  • Shortness of breath.
  • Hiccups that are difficult to stop
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Unexpected weight loss
  • Discomfort that worsens when bending over or laying down
  • Hoarseness upon arising or throughout the day
  • Chronic coughing or throat irritation
  • Throat soreness, irritation and dryness

Possible causes and Risk factors:

Hiatal hernias occur when muscles surrounding the hiatus opening (which separates the oesophagus from the stomach) become weak and stop functioning properly.

When the swallowing muscles and tissues in the oesophagus become inelastic, weak, strained or are exposed to too much stress and pressure, stomach acid and parts of the stomach can make their way into the lower oesophagus. This is why hiatal hernia is associated with heartburn, acid reflux and GERD.

Other factors that can contribute to the condition:

  • Poor diet
  • Being overweight / obese
  • Taking certain medications
  • High levels of inflammation – linked to poor gut health
  • Pregnancy, which puts pressure on the digestive organs.
  • Genetic factors. Some people are born with a larger-than-normal hiatal opening in their diaphragm.
  • Vomiting to the point of pushing too hard on the digestive muscles.
  • Lifting heavy objects to the point of straining a muscle in the digestive tract.
  • Injury to the diaphragm or abdomen.
  • Recovering from surgery of the abdomen.
  • Poor posture while sitting, lifting heavy objects, obesity, excessive smoking and too much stress in life also put you at higher risk.

DO’S & DONT’S

  • Do gentle exercise regularly this will help to strengthen the muscles.
  • Eat a good nutritious diet to avoid constipation and do not overeat.
  • Avoid lifting heavy weights, if you do have to lift, bend from the knees & not from the waist.
  • During pregnancy gentle exercises are important to maintain the tone of the muscles.
  • In case of persistent cough consult your doctor.
  • Avoid smoking, caffeine & alcohol.
