Hydronephrosis is swelling of one or both kidneys that can happen at any age.
It happens when urine can’t drain from a kidney to the bladder and builds up in the kidney – most commonly affects one kidney but can involve both at the same time.
Mild hydronephrosis sometimes goes away on its own over time but chronic one can cause severe kidney damage.
Common Symptoms
Hydronephrosis often causes no symptoms. But symptoms can include, if any:
- Side and back pain that may radiate to the lower stomach area or groin.
- Incomplete voiding, or bladder emptying
- Urinating more frequently.
- An increased urge to urinate
- Painful urination
- Recurrent urinary tract infection (UTI).
- Cloudy urine
- Burning with urination

- Bladder pain

- Nausea or Vomiting
- Weight loss
- Loss of appetite.
- Blood traces in urine.

Possible Causes & Risk Factors:
Hydronephrosis isn’t a primary disease. It’s a secondary structural condition that results from some other underlying disease.
Urine flows from the kidneys to the bladder through tubes called ureters. Urine leaves the bladder and the body through another tube called the urethra.
The condition happens mostly due to a partly or full blockage or obstruction in the urinary tract.
A blocked ureter can cause urine to go back up into the kidney, which causes swelling.
Other potential causes of a blockage may include:
- A narrowing of the ureter from an injury or birth defect
- A bend in the ureteropelvic junction, which is where the ureter meets the pelvis of the kidney
- Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) or prostatitis in men cause an enlarged prostate
- During pregnancy, due to compression of the growing fetus
- Cancers or tumours in or near the ureter, bladder, prostate, cervix or colon.
- Renal calculus or kidney stones – hard buildups of minerals and salts that form inside the kidneys.
- Infections can also inflame any part of the urinary tract, including the kidneys.
- Certain conditions that affect the ovaries, such as cysts, buildups of pus etc.
