Description

PROLACTIN is a hormone produced in the pituitary gland, commonly known as the “Milk Hormone”.

The condition of having too much Prolactin is known as hyper-prolactinemia, that can effect both women and men!

Prolactin has many other functions in the body:

  • Acting on the reproductive system
  • Influences behaviour
  • Regulates the immune system.
  • Regulation of fluids (osmoregulation).
  • Metabolic functions.

Normal Range of Prolactin Levels

  • Women who are not pregnant is less than 25 ng/mL.
  • Women who are pregnant is between 34 – 386 ng/mL.
  • In men is between 2 – 18 ng/mL.

Prolactinoma is a noncancerous tumor of the pituitary gland. This tumor causes the pituitary gland to make too much of a hormone called prolactin.

Prolactin can disrupt the reproductive system (hypogonadism). The major effect of a prolactinoma is decreased levels of certain sex hormones — namely, oestrogen and testosterone.

Some of the signs and symptoms of a prolactinoma are specific to females or males.

In both females and males, prolactinoma can cause:

  • Infertility
  • Osteoporosis – Weak and brittle bones that break easily
  • Loss of libido – low sex drive or desire in sexual activity

Pressure from enlarged tumor can cause:

  • Vision problems
  • Headache
  • Reduction of other hormones produced by the pituitary gland

  • Infrequent periods and change in menstrual flow.
  • Galactorrhoea – unwanted production of milk or milky discharge from the breasts when not pregnant or breastfeeding.

  • Premenstrual mood symptoms
  • Breasts pain / tenderness
  • Hot flashes
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOD)
  • Haemorrhage / bleeding

In men the symptoms may include:

  • ED – Erectile dysfunction
  • Decreased body and facial hair
  • Smaller or shrunk muscles – decreased muscle mass
  • Enlargement of breast (gynaecomastia)
  • Rarely breast milk production
  • Low / zero sperm count

Possible causes and Risk factors for high prolactin levels.

  • The most common cause is a benign (non-cancerous) tumour in the pituitary gland known as a prolactinoma which secretes excessive prolactin.
  • Pregnancy, breastfeeding
  • Infection, injury or tumour of hypothalamus (small region of the brain located near the pituitary gland)
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Low blood sugar levels
  • Anorexia nervosa (an eating disorder in which a person has excessive weight loss and there is fear of gaining weight and becoming fat)
  • Kidney disease e.g., chronic kidney failure
  • Cushing’s disease (excessive release of adreno-corticotropic hormone)
  • Cirrhosis of liver (scarring of liver)
  • Use of certain medicines e.g. antidepressants, antipsychotics, antihypertensives, acid H2 blockers, birth control pills, opiate medicine used to relieve pain.

Natural remedies can affect the body and may not suit everyone. At the start of treatment, some patients—especially with mental health or skin issues—may experience a temporary increase in symptoms. This may represent medicinal aggravation, indicating the body is responding, though symptoms may not be connected and simply coincidental. If they persist, contact us for support.
