Lichen sclerosus is a chronic skin condition that causes patchy, discoloured thin skin which can be very itchy and painful.
It can affect anyone, but postmenopausal females have great tendency of developing it mostly around their genital (vulva) and anal areas – although it can appear any part of the body.
As it isn’t contagious so can’t be spread through sexual or physical contact.

Key signs and symptoms
- Smooth discoloured white patches of skin that can thicken and wrinkle
- The damaged spots can look like wrinkled tissue paper.

- Prone to be tearing.
- Pain and difficulty in sexual intercourse
- Severe scarring can interfere with urination.
- Changes in the tube for urine flow (urethra)
- Soreness or a burning feeling

- Small cracks called fissures.
- In children (under 10 years old), constipation is another very common symptom.
Common Causes or Risk factors
The exact cause of lichen sclerosus isn’t known, but few factors may include.
- An overactive immune system
- Autoimmune disorder
- Genetic predisposition.
- History of skin damage or irritation.
- Persistent friction
- Irritation from urine leakage
- Wearing incontinence pads or panty liners
- Men with urinary incontinence
- An uncircumcised penis
Prevention. Self-care
- Avoid scented products such as bubble baths and shower gels.
- Avoid wearing panty liners if possible and if they are essential use fragrance free ones.
- Carefully dry yourself after passing urine to reduce the risk.
- Using an emollient ointment or yellow soft paraffin (Vaseline) as a barrier cream can protect your skin from exposure to urine.
- If sexual intercourse is painful because of tightening of the skin at the entrance to the vagina, the use of lubricants or vaginal dilators, will help.
- Keep an eye on your skin especially around genitals. There is a small risk (less than 5%) of developing a skin cancer in affected areas on the vulva.
