Orchitis is the inflammation and irritation of one or both testes.
The condition is often linked with an infection of the epididymis – a coiled tube at the back of the testicle that stores and carries sperm.
Common Signs & Symptoms

- Testicular and scrotal pain
- Pain ranging from mild to very bad.
- Headache
- Bloody discharge from the penis

Possible Causes or Risk factors
- Most of the time, it is caused by bacterial or viral infection.
- Viral infection – mumps – most common cause, specially if not vaccinated for mumps.
- Bacterial infections
- Tuberculosis, syphilis, chlamydia, gonorrhoea
- Mechanical injury to the groin during contact sports
- Potentially harmful physical activities
- Unsafe sex
- Epididymo-orchitis
- Untreated blockage of the urinary tract – urethral stricture
- Prostate enlargement
- Having a tube passed through ureter, called a catheter, or a scope in the bladder.
- Sexual behaviours such as:
- History of sexually transmitted diseases – STD
- More than one sexual partner.
- Sex with a partner who has an STI.
- Sex without a condom.
Further Complications
- Sometimes, it can take several weeks or months before the pain and swelling go away.
- Severe or chronic orchitis can affect being able to have children, called fertility. This most often happens in people who get the infection during childhood or the teen years.
- Testicular atrophy – affected testicle to shrink.
- Scrotal abscess – the infected tissue fills with pus.
- It can cause the body to make too little testosterone, a condition called hypogonadism.
