Ulcers are burns or open sores that form in the lining of the part of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. When they occur in the stomach, they are called gastric or peptic ulcers.
The highly concentrated acid produced by the stomach is quite capable of burning a hole through the tissue. When stomach acid is suppressed, ulcer pain rapidly diminishes, and the ulcer heals.
Common Symptoms;
The discomfort is caused by the ulcer and is aggravated by stomach acid coming in contact with the ulcerated area and may cause the following symptoms:
- Severe pain that lasts few minutes to several hours from navel up to your breastbone, that is worse on empty stomach
- For some people, pain may be worse between meals and at night. For others, it may be worse after eating.
- Heartburn or burning sensation
- Poor appetite
- Bloating
- Belching
- Nausea, Vomiting
- Weight loss
- Feeling of fullness
- Excessive salivation, usually flare-up at night
- Peptic ulcers can cause bleeding from the ulcer.
- Having dark blood in stools that are black or tarry.
- Feeling dizzy or fainting.
If the ulcer is in the duodenum, the pain gets better after eating but worse an hour later; if it’s in the stomach, the pain gets worse when eating.
The most common causes of peptic ulcers are:
- H pylori infection
- Long-term use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as Ibuprofen, naproxen, diclofenac sodium and aspirin etc (NSAIDs).
- Radiation treatments
- Being very ill, such as being on a breathing machine
Common triggers that can make the condition or symptoms worse.
- Smoking or chewing tobacco
- Drinking alcohol.
- Stress
- Eating spicy foods.
- Radiation therapy
- Physical injury
Suggested Ulcer Diet – Top foods to consume for fast relief:
Small meals – Eat several meals per day to reduce the burden on the digestive system and relieve ulcer symptoms.
High fiber foods – An increase in fiber can repair ulcers, Whole grains, legumes, fruits, and vegetables are helpful. Oats, pulses, apples, linseed, sunflower seeds, blackcurrants, blackberries and raspberries – are high in soluble fibre.
Green leafy vegetables provide Vitamin K that can help repair damage caused by too much stomach acid.
Favour alkalinizing foods such as potatoes, cabbage, figs, papaya, kale, spinach, mustard greens, Swiss chard, winter squashes, zucchini, carrots, sweet potatoes, yams, lentils, split peas, and persimmons.
Fermented foods. Good bacteria in the gut can help prevent H. pylori infection. Add kimchi, kefir, or unsweetened yogurt to your diet.
Ulcer Foods to Avoid
- Do not overeat or eat late at night.
- Deep-fried and greasy foods stimulate acid and bile production.
- Spicy foods, acidic foods, and alcohol are irritants to the stomach lining.
- Sugar can feed bacteria and salt can also act to increase stomach acid and should be minimized.
- Caffeine – tobacco and certain teas can make ulcers worse.
- Potential food allergen can cause ulcers or make them worse.
- Particular foods aggravate ulcers e.g., tomatoes, eggplant, citrus fruits, pineapple, vinegar, and chilies tend to be prime offenders.
- Stress, anxiety, and emotional upset before eating and while you’re eating, as this can worse the condition.
- Milk can make an ulcer worse. Milk provides brief relief of ulcer pain because it coats the stomach lining, but milk also causes your stomach to produce more acid and digestive juices, which can make ulcers more painful and disturbing. That is why it is advisable to avoid milk during ulcer.
EXERCISE FOR ULCERS – Walking is the best exercise for moving the food along the digestive tract and improving digestion and absorption. Take an easy 10-minute walk after each meal and massage your abdomen as you walk, making circles around your navel with your palms. This helps move your food through your digestive tract without prolonged accumulation.
