Our stomach has a naturally acidic pH approximately 5.5 to 7, which is essential for the digestion of food and killing any ingested bacteria.
Heartburn is a sensation of warmth or burning pain in the sub sternum (breastbone – in the middle of the chest) and epigastrium (upper and middle part of the abdomen) which may radiate into the neck and sometimes into the arms.
It can be mild, moderate or severe. The pain is often worse after eating, in the evening, or when lying down or bending over.
In most cases, It is due to regurgitation of sour fluid from the oesophagus into the oral cavity.
Heartburn that is more frequent or interferes with your daily routine may be a symptom of a more serious condition that requires medical intervention.
Please note that a sharp chest pain may be a symptom of a heart attack. Seek emergency help if you experience severe chest pain or pressure, especially when combined with pain in the arm or jaw or difficulty breathing.
Common Symptoms of heartburn include:
- A burning pain that usually occurs after eating and may occur at night
- Pain that worsens when lying down or bending over
- A bitter or acidic taste in the mouth
- Heartburn occurs more than twice a week
- Difficulty in swallowing
- Persistent nausea or vomiting
- Weight loss because of poor appetite or difficulty eating
- Pain that is aggravated after a large meal, stooping, bending.
- Spontaneous appearance of fluid in mouth (water brash), which may be salty, sour or bitter
Heartburn causes & triggers may include
- Abnormal functioning of oesophagus – Oesophagitis,
- Inflammation or distention of oesophagus.
- Reflux of gastric contents into oesophagus – when stomach acid backs up into the tube that carries food from your mouth to your stomach.
- Hiatus hernia.
- Hyperacidity
- Duodenal ulcer
- Emotional factors like fear, anger, tension etc
- Being overweight or pregnant also can increase your risk of experiencing heartburn.
Certain foods and drinks can also trigger, including:
- Spicy foods
- Onions
- Citrus products
- Tomato products, such as ketchup
- Fatty or fried foods
- Large fatty meals
- Peppermint
- Chocolate
- Alcohol, carbonated beverages, coffee or other caffeinated beverages
Generally, when food is swallowed, a band of muscle around the bottom of the oesophagus (lower oesophageal sphincter) relaxes to allow food and liquid to flow down into the stomach. Then the muscle tightens again.
If the lower oesophageal sphincter isn’t working as it should, stomach acid can flow back up into the oesophagus (acid reflux) and cause heartburn.
PREVENTION – DO’S & DONT’S
- Avoid oily and fatty food
- Avoid spicy food
- Do not sleep immediately after meals
- Take small meals frequently instead of a large meal
- Do relaxation techniques like meditation and yoga
