Seborrheic dermatitis is an irritating skin condition that is commonly seen on the face or scalp that usually affects oily areas of the body, such as the face, sides of the nose, eyebrows, ears, eyelids and chest.
It causes scaly patches, inflamed skin and stubborn dandruff.
This condition is not contagious and is also called dandruff, seborrheic eczema and seborrheic psoriasis and when it occurs in infants, it’s called cradle cap.
CAUSATION
It occurs mainly caused due to an increased sebum production, too much of a yeast on the skin, weakened immune system, stress, fatigue, change of season, nervous system conditions, mental health conditions, immune system disorders or obstruction of the sebaceous ducts.
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS
- Dandruff or flaking skin on scalp, hair, eyebrows, beard or mustache.
- Patches of greasy skin covered with flaky white or yellow scales or crust on the scalp, face, sides of the nose, eyebrows, ears, eyelids, chest, armpits, groin area or under the breasts
- Ring-shaped rash, or rashes that may look darker or lighter.
- Itchiness (pruritus)
Seborrheic dermatitis is worse in colder, drier climates and improves in the summer. Stress and fatigue can also make it worse.
