Shingles (Herpes Zoster) – Post-herpetic Neuralgia

Shingles is a very painful viral infection caused by the varicella-zoster virus — the same virus that causes chickenpox.

After you’ve had chickenpox, the virus stays dormant in your body’s nerve cells for the rest of your life. Years later, the virus may reactivate as shingles.

When varicella-zoster virus reappears as shingles, the virus is known as herpes zoster.

It typically looks like a single stripe of blisters that wraps around the left side or the right side of your torso.

The most common complication with shingles is the post-herpetic neuralgia – an extremely painful condition that occurs for a long time after your blisters have cleared.

This condition is known as post-herpetic neuralgia. It is thought to be caused by a continuing irritation of the nerves after the infection is over.

Shingles isn’t contagious!

Common signs & symptoms of shingles and post-herpetic neuralgia:

Shingles can occur anywhere on your body.

The symptoms are usually isolated to one side of the body and commonly occur on the face, neck, in the eyes or in the internal organs.

  • Fluid-filled strip of blisters that break open and crust over.
  • A tingling or numbness feeling
  • A painful burning sensation
  • A headache
  • Itchiness
  • Shooting pain on an area of skin
  • A rash may then appear, with raised dots or blisters forming.
  • The rash symptoms can range from mild itching to extreme pain.
  • On the face the virus may damage the eyes.
  • Post-herpetic neuralgia appears without a rash
  • Fatigue
  • A general achy feeling
  • Pain that radiates from the spine
  • Sensitivity to touch or to light
  • Un-erupted or under skin rash associated with an inflammation of nerves beneath the skin.

It typically appears in the elderly usually over 50.

  • History or HIV or Aids
  • High doses of corticoid steroids

Natural remedies can affect the body and may not suit everyone. At the start of treatment, some patients—especially with mental health or skin issues—may experience a temporary increase in symptoms. This may represent medicinal aggravation, indicating the body is responding, though symptoms may not be connected and simply coincidental. If they persist, contact us for support.

Why some patients choose natural, complementary or holistic remedies:
• Symptomatic relief and improved well-being
• Gentle options with fewer side effects
• Whole-person focus, addressing physical, emotional, and lifestyle factors
• Root-cause and preventive emphasis
• Encouragement of active self-care
• Support alongside conventional treatment
• Personalised and accessible care

Precautions:
• Inform your healthcare provider about any complementary therapies
• Some herbs or supplements may interact with conventional medications
• Do not replace conventional treatment for serious, chronic, or terminal conditions
