Tinnitus is a common health issue that affects around 15% – 20% population.
It is an annoying condition that cause sizzling, ringing or other sounds in one or both ears, which can be constant or irregular and very annoying.
A person with tinnitus will often hear ringing, buzzing, hissing, chirping or whistling sounds that appear to come from inside the body itself.
Tinnitus is most likely to affect older people, men more often than women, those with past ear damage, or anyone with hearing loss.
Although tinnitus is often associated with hearing loss, it does not cause the loss, nor does a hearing loss cause tinnitus.
Tinnitus can cause various types of phantom noises in ears, including:
- Buzzing
- Sizzling
- Ringing
- Roaring
- Clicking
- Hissing
- Humming
- Cracking
- Snapping
- Re-echoing
- Pulsating
- Throbbing
- Running water etc.
Tinnitus can significantly affect quality of life.
- Fatigue
- Stress
- Sleep problems
- Trouble concentrating
- Memory problems
- Depression
- Anxiety and irritability
- Headaches
- Problems with work and family life
Common Causes of tinnitus
- Prolonged exposure to loud sounds. The noise causes permanent damage to the sound-sensitive cells. Carpenters, pilots, rock musicians and street repair workers are among those.
- People who work with chain saws, guns or other loud devices or who repeatedly listen to loud music.
- A single exposure to a sudden extremely loud noise can also cause tinnitus.
- A degenerative auditory nerve, neurological problems, sensorineural hearing loss, and Meniere’s disease.
- Hyperacusis is an over-sensitivity to certain sound frequencies.
- Aggressive use of Q-tips to clean the ears is another widespread cause of tinnitus. Earwax helps protect the ear by trapping dust and bacteria, so ideally it should not be cleaned up too frequently.
- Blockages of the ear due to a build-up of wax, an ear infection, a tumour of the nerve that allows us to hear.
- Acoustic neuroma or other head and neck tumors.
- Eustachian tube dysfunction – the tube in ear connecting the middle ear to upper throat remains expanded all the time, which can make your ear feel full.
- High altitudes
- Upper respiratory tract infections
- Severe weight loss from malnutrition or excessive dieting
- Overconsumption of cold and raw foods and dairy products promotes the formation of mucus, causing congestion and preventing proper nourishment of the ears.
- Nerve problems (neurologic disorders), such as multiple sclerosis or migraine headache.
- Negative emotions are also often associated with tinnitus. Anger, frustration, resentment, and hatred.
- Certain vitamins and mineral deficiencies
- A perforated eardrum
- Muscle spasms in the inner ear.
- Side effects of certain medicines.
- The natural ageing process can result in a deterioration of parts of the ear.
- Otosclerosis, a disease that results in stiffening of the small bones in the middle ear
- Other medical conditions e.g. anaemia, allergies, diabetes, migraines, rheumatoid arthritis, circulatory problems and thyroid
- Blood vessel disorders. Conditions that affect your blood vessels — such as atherosclerosis, high blood pressure, or kinked or malformed blood vessels — can cause blood to move through your veins and arteries with more force.
- Neck or jaw problem – Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders. The joint on each side of head in front of your ears, where your lower jawbone meets your skull
- Injuries to the head and neck etc.
- Obesity
- Tinnitus can worsen in people who are stressed, have fatigue or drink alcohol, smoke, consume caffeinated drinks.
Things to avoid – Salty foods. It is generally recommended to avoid salty foods because of their association with high blood pressure, which can cause tinnitus.
Avoid or eliminate foods that increase cholesterol. Food like fried and greasy foods, fatty meats, egg yolks, sausages, butter, oil or margarine based hydrogenated oil. Replace it with oils rich in omega-6, linoleic acid and other unsaturated fats.
Identify and avoid allergens: Allergies to certain foods can cause tinnitus. Food like avocado, chocolate, milk, cheese, soybeans, ripe bananas and some citrus fruits are common allergens that cause tinnitus.
Avoid stimulants like alcohol, tea, coffee and cigarettes aggravate the sensitivity of auditory nerves resulting in increased sensitivity and ringing of ears.
Avoid cold and raw foods and icy beverages, as the coldness may constrict the eustachian tubes, causing poor drainage from the inner ears.
Avoid processed meats and dairy products, as they have a tendency to increase mucus production.
To avoid irritation or damaging the inside ear, don’t stick anything inside the ear canal. This can make tinnitus more difficult.

Natural remedies can affect the body and may not suit everyone. At the start of treatment, some patients—especially with mental health or skin issues—may experience a temporary increase in symptoms. This may represent medicinal aggravation, indicating the body is responding, though symptoms may not be connected and simply coincidental. If they persist, contact us for support.
