Description

A hernia is a condition that develops due to a spot weakness in a muscle, through which an organ or tissue squeezes or bulges through.

Muscles are usually strong and tight enough to keep your organs and intestines in place, but a hernia can develop if there are any weak spots.

There are different types of hernias that develop inside different parts of the body, causing an abnormal bulging of one area into another.

Muscles weakness & straining are the main causes.

Poor nutrition, over exertion, smoking, obesity are some of the factors which cause weakness of muscles.

Constipation, pregnancy and persistent coughing can also cause the condition worse.

An Umbilical hernia appears as a lump in or near the belly button (navel) and is common in babies who are born prematurely, infants, young children & women who have had many children, where small intestine passes through the abdomen wall near the navel.

An umbilical hernia occurs as a soft swelling or bulge when part of your intestine protrudes through the opening in your abdominal muscles near your bellybutton (navel).

Umbilical hernias in babies often close on their own in the first few years of their life.

Umbilical hernias that appear during adulthood are more likely to need surgical repair.

Common Symptoms of umbilical hernia.

  • A soft swelling or bulge near the navel.
  • They are usually painless, but in adults may cause abdominal discomfort.
  • It may get bigger while laughing, coughing, crying or going to the toilet.
  • It may shrink when relaxing or lying down.
  • In babies, the bulge may be visible when they cry, cough or strain.
  • It may also cause vomiting, tenderness, swelling or discoloration at the site.

Possible Causes & Risk Factors.

  • An umbilical hernia can develop when fatty tissue or a part of the bowel pokes through into an area near the navel.
  • Being overweight or obese
  • Straining while lifting or moving heavy objects
  • Persistent heavy cough
  • Fluid in the abdominal cavity
  • Previous abdominal surgery
  • Long-term peritoneal dialysis to treat kidney failure
  • History of multiple pregnancies – during pregnancy, the umbilical cord passes through a small opening in the baby’s abdominal muscles.
  • The opening normally closes just after birth but i the muscles don’t join completely in the abdominal wall, an umbilical hernia may appear at birth or later in life.

DO’S & DONT’S

  • Do gentle exercise regularly this will help to strengthen the muscles.
  • Eat a good nutritious diet to avoid constipation and do not overeat.
  • Emphasize high-fiber foods. Fruits, vegetables and whole grains contain fiber that can help prevent constipation and straining.
  • Avoid lifting heavy weights, if you do have to lift, bend from the knees & not from the waist.
  • During pregnancy gentle exercises are important to maintain the tone of the muscles.
  • In case of persistent cough consult your doctor.
  • Avoid smoking, caffeine & alcohol.

Further Complications, if not treated.

Adults with umbilical hernias are somewhat more likely to experience a blockage of the intestines.

If the trapped portion of intestine is completely cut off from the blood supply, it can lead to tissue death. Infection may spread throughout the abdominal cavity, causing a life-threatening situation and require emergency surgery.

Complications can occur when the protruding abdominal tissue becomes trapped (incarcerated) and can no longer be pushed back into the abdominal cavity. This reduces the blood supply to the section of trapped intestine and can lead to abdominal pain and tissue damage.
