Ganglion or synovial cyst is a small hard growth, a fluid filled cavity or a lump that forms near a joint or tendons mainly on the wrist on back of hand.
They are benign cysts of gouty origin that usually form on the wrists but can form in any joint or a tendon including ankles or feet.
Ganglion cysts are non-cancerous and are typically round or oval shaped and are filled with a jellylike fluid, that can cause pain if a nerve gets pressed under this cyst and may affect the joints movement.
They are of various sizes and can change size over time.
Some common features of ganglion cysts:
- Shape and size. Some are too small to feel. The size of a cyst can change, often getting larger over time with joint movement.
- Ganglion cysts usually are painless. But if a cyst presses on a nerve or other structures, it can cause pain, tingling, numbness or muscle weakness.
Possible Causes: For many the cause is unknown! But certain factors may increase the risk of ganglion cysts such as:
- Sex and age. They most often occur in women between the ages of 20 and 40.
- People who have wear-and-tear arthritis in the finger joints closest to the fingernails are at higher risk.
- Joint or tendon injury. Joints or tendons that have been injured are more likely to develop ganglion cysts.
