Athlete’s foot is the common name for a fungal infection of the foot, often called ringworm.
Fungal infections favour warm, dark and moist areas of the body like armpits, groins, beard and in between the toes and mostly tend to flare up during warm weather.
Such infection are contagious and spread through touch, sharing of clothes, towels and spread via contaminated floors.
It commonly occurs in people whose feet are very sweaty while confined within tight-fitting shoes.
COMMON SYMPTOMS
Infection with these fungi generally causes mild to severe scaling between the toes, but it can also cause an intense itchy red rash, burning, stinging or blisters that cover the toes and the sides of the feet.
Since the fungus may also cause the skin to crack, it can lead to bacterial infections, especially in older people or those with poor circulation in their feet.
Other symptoms include:
- Raised inflamed well defined / ringed lesions with itching. Whitish flakes in between the toes.
- Peeling or cracked skin between the toes
- Itchiness, especially right after taking off shoes and socks
- Inflamed skin that might appear reddish, purplish or greyish, depending on your skin color
- Dry, scaly skin on the bottom of the foot that extends up the side
SELF-CARE
- Take a bath at least once a day and dry thoroughly.
- Do not leave the feet – Pat them dry and avoid harsh rubbing.
- Do not mix the laundry of an infected person with those of others.
- Wear cotton socks and underwear that absorb sweat easily. Wear open leather shoes and avoid trainers as they encourage sweating.
- Do not machine wash linen or clothes at low temperatures. Soak the clothes of infected persons in hot water separately.
- Treatment may have to be continued for a month or more for full results.
