Probable Causes of PE.
Precipitating factors
- A blood clot of the veins of the calves or pelvis – when your legs lie flat for long periods of time, the flow of blood through your veins slows down and blood can pool in your legs.
- Blood pooling in a certain part of your body after long periods of inactivity, like after surgery, bed rest or a long train, flight or plane ride.
- Great straining during passing stools
- Straining to get out of bed or wheelchair
- Hormonal-based contraception such as birth control pills (oestrogen supplements!), patches or rings or hormone replacement therapy.
- Have a family history of blood clots.
- Heavy smoker – tobacco increases the risk of blood clots.
- Have diabetes.
- Are older than 60.
- Being overweight (BMI greater than 25)
- Pregnant or have given birth in the previous six weeks.
- Due to central venous catheter through arm or leg.
- Paroxysmal cough
- Asphyxia – suffocation
- Acute on chronic bronchitis
- Severe asthma
- Elevated clotting factors can occur with some types of cancer – especially brain, ovary, pancreas, colon, stomach, lung and kidney and cancers that have spread, malignancy.
- Miliary carcinomatosis of the lung
- Lymphangitic carcinomatosis – mostly from breast, lung, GI, ovarian and cervical cancers
- Chemotherapy treatment
- Injury to a vein, like varicose veins or from a fracture or surgery – especially in your pelvis, hip, knee or leg.
Cardiovascular condition like:
- Congestive heart failure
- Myocardial infarction (heart attack)
- Mitral stenosis – abnormal narrowing of the mitral valve of the heart.
- Infective endocarditis – inflammation of the lining of the heart cavity and the valves.
- Isolated myocarditis – inflammation of the heart muscle.
- Atrial fibrillation
Common SYMPTOMS of Pulmonary Embolism.
- Dyspnoea – Sudden onset of difficult breathing
- Sudden shortness of breath — being active or at rest.
- Rapid heartbeat (pulse) or fast breathing.
- Unexplained sharp pain in your chest, arm, back, shoulder, neck or jaw – get worse when taking a breath.
- Circulatory collapse due to sudden reduction in cerebral and coronary blood flow
- Cyanosis – Pale, clammy or bluish skin.
- Excessive sweating.
- Anxious, lightheaded, dizziness.
- Syncope – passing out as if your heart rate or blood pressure drops suddenly.
- A cough that may include bloody or blood-streaked mucus
- Fever
- Leg pain or swelling, or both, usually in the back of the lower leg
Further complication of pulmonary embolism may include:
- Permanent damage to lungs – infarction – lung tissue death.
- Put strain on your heart, causing heart failure, Pulmonary hypertension.
