Description

Pulmonary hypertension is a type of high blood pressure that affects right side of the heart and the arteries in the lungs – that means you have high blood pressure in your pulmonary arteries.

Pulmonary arteries are the blood vessels that carry pure oxygenated blood from your heart to the lungs.

A typical heart has two upper chambers and two lower chambers. Each time blood moves through the heart, the lower right chamber pumps blood to the lungs. The blood passes through a large blood vessel called the pulmonary artery.

In pulmonary arterial hypertension, blood vessels in the lungs are narrowed, blocked or destroyed and the damage slows blood flow through the lungs – ultimately the blood pressure in the lung arteries goes up. The extra effort of the heart to pump the blood eventually causes the heart muscle to become weak and fail.

Chronic pulmonary hypertension is a dangerous or a fatal condition, because it disrupts the flow of blood through your heart and lungs.
