Pemphigus (vulgaris & foliaceus) is a group of skin disorders that cause successive outbreaks of blisters (swelling containing watery fluid and / or blood) and sores on the skin or mucous membranes, such as in the mouth or on the genitals.
The sores may heal slowly or not at all. The condition can become life-threatening if the sores become infected.
Pemphigus isn’t passed from one person to another.
Common Symptoms
- Mouth blisters or erosions are more common – initially begins in the oral and nasal mucous membrane & limit there for several weeks & then gradually spread to other parts of the body.
- Blisters in the mouth or throat may make it hard to talk, drink and eat.
- Erosion of larynx leading to hoarseness
- Blisters are usually seen on the trunk, chest, back, shoulders – flexures, scalp & umbilicus which are painful, itchy, scattered and bilateral – both sides
- The blisters are flaccid, flabby and lacking in firmness
- Blisters rupture easily leaving scales or open sores
- Superficial erosions & red scaly patches
- The sores may become infected, ooze and very painful.
Possible Causes and Risk factors
- In most cases, it’s unknown what causes the disease to arise, but considered to be an autoimmune disorder, which means your immune system mistakenly attacks healthy cells in your body.
- Benign familial pemphigus- Hereditary
- The disease can also develop as a side effect of certain medicines, like penicillamine and blood pressure drugs.
- The risk of pemphigus increases if you’re middle-aged (40 – 60) or older.
