Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted disease also called STDs, STIs or venereal diseases that is caused by an infection in the vaginal or uterine tract caused by Chlamydia trachomatis bacteria.
Chlamydia infection has recently become very common, especially among young adults and teenagers. It is thought that around 20% of young women may have a Chlamydia infection that spread through oral, vaginal or anal sex or during pregnancy and delivery of the baby – in that case it can cause pneumonia or a serious eye infection in the newborn.
Chlamydia trachomatis can also effect or infect the eyes, throat or rectum.
Eye infections, called conjunctivitis, cause the inside of the eyelid to be red and irritated. In the throat, an infection may have no symptoms, or a person may have a sore throat. An infection in the rectum may have no symptoms or may cause rectal pain, discharge or bleeding.
What are the symptoms of Chlamydia?
In women, symptoms of Chlamydia may include:
- An unusual vaginal discharge
- Bleeding after intercourse
- Bleeding between menstrual periods
- Abdominal or pelvic pain.
In men, symptoms of Chlamydia may include:
- Discharge from the penis
- Burning sensation during urination
- Swollen and/or painful testicles.
However, about 75% of women and 50% of men with Chlamydia have no symptoms of infection.
Other Risk factors
- Sex before age of 25!
- Not using a condom or incorrect condom use.
- New, changing or multiple sex partners.
Further complications:
- Pelvic inflammatory disease, also called PID – an infection of the uterus and fallopian tubes. In women, untreated Chlamydia can spread into the pelvic area and infect the uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries leading to pelvic inflammatory disease, a serious infection.
- It is also a major cause of cervicitis, urethritis, and endometriosis in women.
- This is a worry because an infection can cause sterility.
- Infection near the testicles – epididymis. The infection can result in fever, scrotal pain and swelling.
- Prostatitis or Prostate gland infection that can cause pain during or after sex, fever and chills, painful urination, and lower back pain.
- Ectopic pregnancy. This occurs when a fertilized egg implants and grows outside of the uterus, usually in a fallopian tube. The egg needs to be removed to prevent life-threatening complications, such as a burst tube.
- Reactive arthritis AKA Reiter syndrome, that typically affects the joints, eyes and urethra — the tube that carries urine from the bladder to outside of your body.

Natural remedies can affect the body and may not suit everyone. At the start of treatment, some patients—especially with mental health or skin issues—may experience a temporary increase in symptoms. This may represent medicinal aggravation, indicating the body is responding, though symptoms may not be connected and simply coincidental. If they persist, contact us for support.
