Diabetes Insipidus (arginine vasopressin):
Technically this is not diabetes but have similar types of symptoms resembling. “Diabetes insipidus” and “diabetes mellitus” sound alike, but both conditions are not connected.
It is a clinical condition where there is a failure of vasopressin (hormone secreted by hypothalamus) action to maintain the osmolality of body fluids or a problem that causes the fluids in the body to become out of balance, which results in large volumes of urine and compensatory increase in thirst.
Individuals with this condition who drink a lot of fluids may make as much as 20 quarts (about 19 litres) of urine a day.
POSSIBLE CAUSES
- Brain tumors
- Damage to the pituitary gland or hypothalamus from surgery, a tumor, a head injury or an illness.
- An autoimmune reaction that causes the body’s immune system to damage the cells that make anti-diuretic hormone.
- Certain medicines, including lithium and certain antiviral medicines.
- Kidney condition such as a blocked urinary tract or a urinary tract infection.
- Infections like meningitis, tuberculoma, encephalitis
- Genetic
- Rarely thrombocytopenic purpura, radiotherapy for brain tumours
COMMON SYMPTOMS
- An increased frequency of urine specially at night (3-10 litres/day)
- Passing of large volumes of dilute or pale urine (specific gravity <1002)
- Being very thirsty, often with a preference for cold water, chilled or iced drinks.
- Getting up to urinate and drink water often during the night.
- Continuous, unquenchable thirst
- Dehydration in severe cases
- Night sweats in atypical cases
- Weight loss
Diabetes Insipidus may cause the following symptom in very young children.
