Description

Gastroenteritis, also known as infectious diarrhoea, is the inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract—the stomach and intestine (the gut).

It is caused by viruses, bacteria or other microbes! The most common way to develop viral gastroenteritis — often called stomach flu — is through contact with an infected person or by consuming contaminated food or water.

It affects people of all ages but is particularly common in young children.

POSSIBLE CAUSES & RISK FACTORS

  • Viral – rotavirus, which spreads by direct contact with either vomiting or diarrhoea.
  • Acute infection mainly due to bacteria- [Salmonella, Staphylococcus, Listeria (from soft cheese), Campylobacter (from contaminated poultry, fish or unpasteurized milk), Spigellia, E. coli, Vibrio cholerae, clostridium difficile.
  • Food poisoning toxins.
  • Spreads from person to person, close contact with infected pets.
  • Uncooked meat.
  • Ingestion of contaminated food, stale food.
  • Infected cattle- through unpasteurised milk.
  • Poor hygiene, low socioeconomic conditions.
  • Food that hasn’t been stored and cooked at the correct temperatures.
  • Occasionally, gastroenteritis can be triggered by some medicines, such as antibiotics, which upset the natural balance of bacteria in your gut.

COMMON SIGN AND SYMPTOMS

  • Watery & copious diarrhoea or dysentery – may contain blood, mucous (rice water).
  • Stools first yellow then becomes colourless.
  • Occasional muscle aches or headache
  • Pain at anus while passing stool.
  • Nausea and retching followed by vomiting, copious and incessant watery vomit.
  • Stomach pain – cramps in stomach / abdomen.
  • A high temperature (fever- 100 -102º Fahrenheit.)
  • Collapse – subnormal temperature.
  • Headache and sometimes aching limbs.
  • Anorexia
  • Malaise
  • Dehydration
  • Fatigue – lack of energy
  • Disorientation
  • Decreased urination.
  • Fast pulse.
  • Loss of appetite

Further complications with Gastroenteritis:

  • Lactose intolerance, which makes you sensitive to dairy products.
  • Reactive arthritis or other conditions where your body’s immune system mistakenly attacks your own tissues – this usually happens after bacterial gastroenteritis.
  • Haemolytic uraemic syndrome – a serious kidney problem.
  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)

Complications mainly affect:

  • Young children
  • Older people (the over-60s)
  • People with other health problems
  • People with a weak immune system
  • People taking certain medicines, such as corticosteroids

DIETARY MANAGEMENT

  • First of all treat the causative factor(s).
  • Avoid solid foods for at least 24 hrs. But If you feel like eating, try small amounts of plain, light bland foods, such as soup, rice, pasta and bread.
    • Porridge, boiled rice, boiled vegetables, dry toast.
    • Stewed apple, boiled potatoes, china grass, and ripe banana.
    • Consume plenty of vegetable soups and juices – as they are rich in minerals and salts and help to replace lost body fluids.
    • Curds, kanji (starch prepared from boiled rice)
  • Take anti-vomiting medications, and/or anti-diarrhoeal medication if you need to – You can also ask your pharmacist or GP for advice about whether they’re suitable.
  • Drink plenty of fluids every 15-30 minutes to avoid dehydration – You need to drink more than usual to replace the fluids lost from vomiting and diarrhoea. Water is best, but you could also try fruit juices and soup.
    • Boil one glass of water (250 ml) with 2 tbsp sugar and one pinch of salt. You can also add 1/2 a lemon juice and glucose.
    • Or add 2 teaspoonfuls of apple/ carrot juice in boiled water.
    • Butter milk, coconut water, barley water with skimmed milk in 1:1 ratio.
    • Watermelon juice, sugarcane juice.
    • Consume more of garlic, live yoghurt, bilberries, cranberries and cold pressed honey – all have antibacterial effects.
  • Get plenty of rest.

Probiotics are supplements or foods (such as live yoghurt) that contain ‘good’ bacteria. They may help to reduce how long you have diarrhoea.

Oral rehydration solutions come as a powder that you add to water to make a drink. Oral rehydration solutions have the right mix of sugars, minerals and salts to help you replace lost water and salt. Most people with gastroenteritis get better without needing one of these solutions. But these products may be helpful for:

  • Older people
  • People who have other illnesses
  • Young children

THINGS TO AVOID – Milk products, raw food, non-vegetarian, spicy and seasoned food till complete recovery.
