Pulmonary fibrosis is a serious, lifelong lung disease.
This thickened, stiff tissue makes it more difficult for your lungs to work properly and worsen over time.

It is a common end result of a variety of lung disorders, when the affected portion of the lung is damaged, shrunken, firm and airless.

Signs and symptoms of pulmonary fibrosis may include:
- Dyspnoea – Shortness of breath.
- Shallow spurts, especially during exertion or soon after you exercise.
- Cough with excessive phlegm (with pus).
- Dry cough that doesn’t go away.
- Blood-tinged sputum
- Unintended weight loss.
- Aching muscles and joints.
- Clubbing that is widening and rounding of the tips of the fingers or toes.
- Chest on affected side is retracted and flat
- Extreme tiredness, no matter how much you rest or sleep.
- Cyanosis, bluish skin (in fair-skinned people) or grey or white skin around the mouth or eyes (in dark-skinned people) from too little oxygen in the blood.
Possible Causes and risk factors.
- Unknown cause at times, but certain factors may contribute such as
- Genetic or hereditary
- Certain occupations, such as those who work around fumes, in mines, farming, construction, hairdressers, stone cutters / polishers and metal workers.
- Triggered by viruses and exposure to tobacco smoke.
Inhalation or exposure to a number of toxins and pollutants:
- Silica dust
- Asbestos fibres
- Hard metal, coal or grain dust
- Bird and animal droppings
- As a result of chronic hypersensitivity pneumonitis, like exposures to things in the home such as molds.
Certain medications such as:
