Our lymphatic system is part of the body’s immune system and is made up of tissues and organs that help protect the body from infections and diseases.
These include the tonsils, adenoids, thymus, spleen, bone marrow, lymph vessels, and lymph nodes.
The lymphatic system is a slow-moving system of organs, tissues, lymph vessels and lymph nodes throughout the body – supplementary to the body’s system of blood circulation.
This system delivers nutrients to the cells and carries away excessive water, cells, bacteria, viruses and toxins etc., as a result our:
- Body heals faster after surgeries etc.
- Removes bad waste & excess water
- Supports and enhances immune system
- Reduces swelling
- Improve circulation
- Alleviates pains
- Shaping the structure. (obesity etc.)
Lymph nodes also known as lymph glands are small, bean-shaped clusters of cells that play key part of the body’s immune system or to fight off infection etc.,
They function as filters, trapping viruses, bacteria and other causes of illnesses before they can infect our body.
They are located throughout the body, including the head, neck, armpits, chest, abdomen, groin and under the chin (just below jaw).
Lymph nodes are in groups, and each group drains a specific area of the body.
Some of its key functions include:
They filter lymphatic fluid for harmful substances and contain white blood cells that help the body fight infection and disease.
Adenopathy or Lymphadenopathy means swollen lymph nodes while lymphadenitis is an infection in one or more lymph nodes – a sign that your body is fighting an infection or illness.
Swollen lymph nodes usually occur because of infection from bacteria or viruses.
General swelling of lymph nodes may indicate a minor infection, such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) or the immune system disorder, such as lupus or rheumatoid arthritis while hard, fixed, rapidly growing nodes, indicating a possible cancer or lymphoma.
The rest of the body’s circulatory system uses the heart as a “Pump”, to move blood around the body, but lymphatic circulation relies on body movement and breathing.
Impaired circulation leads to build up of toxins (metabolic waste), which in turn can lead to re-occurring illnesses (cold, flu, obesity etc.) and feeling of sluggishness due to a depressed immune system.
Common Symptom of lymphadenitis. Swollen lymph nodes are a sign that something is wrong somewhere in your body, as we may notice:
- Tenderness and pain in the lymph nodes
- Feel hard or rubbery, or don’t move when you push
- Fixed, rapidly growing nodes
- Nodes that are painful to touch.
- Nodes that are soft or matted together.
- Redness or red streaking of the skin over nodes.
- Nodes that are filled with pus (an abscess)
- Fluid that drains from the nodes to the skin.
- Swelling that may be the size of a pea or kidney bean, or even much larger
- Runny nose
- Sore throat
- Persistent Fever
- Unexplained weight loss
- Misc other symptoms of an upper respiratory infection
- Night sweats
- Difficulty swallowing or breathing.
Possible Causes & Risk factors
The site of the swollen lymph nodes may help identify the underlying cause, such as around the neck, under your chin, or armpits and in your groin etc.
The most common cause of swollen lymph nodes is an infection, particularly a viral infection e.g., common cold.
Other possible causes of swollen lymph nodes include:
- Older age. Aging increases the risk of getting infections, immune system disorders and cancer.
- Weakened immune system
- Common colds, tonsillitis and throat infections (streptococcus throat)
- Skin wounds, staphylococcus infections,
- Measles
- Ear infections
- Infected (abscessed) tooth
- Mononucleosis
- Skin or wound infections, such as cellulitis
- Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)
- Tuberculosis
- Certain sexually transmitted infections, such as syphilis
- Toxoplasmosis — a parasitic infection resulting from contact with the feces of an infected cat or eating undercooked meat
- Bacterial infection from a cat scratch or bite
- Lupus — a chronic inflammatory disease that targets your joints, skin, kidneys, blood cells, heart and lungs
- Rheumatoid arthritis — an inflammatory disease targeting the tissue that lines your joints (synovium)
- Lymphoma – that originates in your lymphatic system
- Leukaemia – of body’s blood-forming tissue, including your bone marrow and lymphatic system
- Metastasized or other spreading cancers to lymph nodes
- Use of certain medications, such as the anti-seizure medication phenytoin (Dilantin), cephalosporin antibiotics, penicillin, sulfa drugs and preventive medications for malaria.
- Having sex without protection
- Injecting illicit drugs
How to prevent swollen lymph nodes
To help prevent catching viruses, you can:
- Wash your hands properly
- Avoid touching your eyes and nose
- Stay away from people who are sick
- Disinfect surfaces in your home or workspace
- Get enough sleep, eat healthy, and exercise
Health as its best with regular drainage!
Gentle, rhythmical massage treatment
Lymphatic drainage supports the natural circulation and movement of toxins and fluids through the lymph nodes ducts.
This stimulation strengthens the immune system, clears blockages, transports nutrients to cells / organs and helps the metabolism and overall health.
- To stimulate the circulation of lymph fluid around the body
- To rapidly remove the wastes & toxins from a sluggish system.
- Can help with healing after surgery
- Regenerates tissues to reduce scarring
- Reduce swelling & detoxify the body
- Aids in removing excess body weight.
