Urticaria – also known as hives, welts or nettle rash is a common allergic reaction in which itchy, raised rashes appears on the skin. This can appear anywhere in the body and vary in size from small, pimple like spots to raised patches.
It is the inflammation of the surface layers of the skin, and is characterized by small, itchy red or white welts (called wheals).
Sometimes they disappear immediately without any treatment but sometimes last for days or even weeks without any scars formation but may recur frequently. Chronic cases are often very difficult to treat.
Urticaria is closely related to another condition called angioedema, which involves swelling in the deeper layers of the skin. When swelling occurs in the throat or tongue, angioedema can be life-threatening.
Urticaria and angioedema are also closely related to anaphylaxis, an extremely dangerous condition that can lead to death within minutes or hours.
Anaphylaxis is an overwhelming allergic reaction that may lead to swelling of internal organs, collapse of blood circulation, shock, or suffocation. It may be caused by all the same factors that trigger hives; one of the most well-known causes is bee sting allergy.
COMMON CAUSES:
- Allergy is the main cause; however, the allergenic trigger is often unknown, that can be to certain foods e.g., strawberry, shellfish, dairy, peanuts or other legumes, chocolate, fresh fruit etc., certain drugs & medicines (for pain), environmental pollutants like smoke, house dust etc.
- Sometimes other allergens such as pollens, moulds, or animal dander, can produce hives.
- Hives can also be caused by heat (cholinergic urticaria or “prickly heat”), cold (cold urticaria), pressure (dermographism and pressure urticaria), light (solar urticaria).
- Emotional stress and anxiety.
- Insect bite and stings.
- Infections due to bacteria, viruses (hives), parasites & fungus.
- Scratching
- Exercise
- Alcohol or food
- Pressure on the skin, as from a tight waistband
- Excessive perspiration
- Infections such as mononucleosis
- Contact with chemicals.
- Vibration
- In some cases, chronic hives may be related to an underlying illness, such as a hepatitis B, thyroid disease – lupus, autoimmune diseases, leukaemia or rarely cancer.
Complications
Chronic hives don’t put you at any sudden risk of a serious allergic reaction (anaphylaxis). But if you do experience hives as part of a serious allergic reaction, seek emergency care. Signs and symptoms of anaphylaxis include dizziness, trouble breathing, and swelling of your lips, eyelids and tongue.
