Warts and verrucas are small lumps – viral infections on the skin or mucous membranes, that most people have at some point in their life.
A wart is a non-cancerous skin growth that occurs when a virus called human papillomavirus (HPV) infects the surface layer of the skin.
Warts feel firm and rough. They most commonly occur on the fingers, palms, knuckles, knees, hands, neck, chest, genitals and arms, but can occur almost anywhere.
Warts on the bottom of the feet are called plantar warts, and those that occur in the genital area are called genital warts.
In most cases, warts have a roughened surface and a clearly defined boundary.
Warts are usually painless, However, when they occur in an area to pressure or rubbing, such as the bottom of the foot, they can become extremely tender or uncomfortable.
They come in all shapes and sizes, are highly contagious, and they can appear in anyone of any age, but children and teenagers are particularly susceptible.
Nearly all warts are harmless, but once they pop up on visible places such as the face or hands, most people will do almost anything to get rid of them.
Genital warts that occur on the cervix are associated with a significantly increased risk of cervical dysplasia.
Warts are usually skin coloured but may appear darker on black or brown skin.
COMMON CAUSATION
- The key thing to remember that they are an indicator of your immune system being under pressure.
- They often come following a period of intense stress or shock. The shock can be of a physical nature such as a fall or impact injury, or an emotional one such as a bereavement.
- Either way, your immunity drops, and the body doesn’t recognise how to deal with the infection, which then creates the response.
- They are caused by viruses – human papillomavirus.
- The virus causes an excess amount of keratin, a hard protein, to develop in the top skin layer (epidermis).
- The extra keratin produces the rough, hard texture of a wart.
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS
- Flesh coloured to brown coloured swellings
- Occasionally warts can produce itching and burning.
- They feel firm and rough.
- Usually skin coloured but may appear darker on dark skin.
- Verruca appear on your feet and have tiny black dots under the hard skin – They are more likely to be painful – like standing on a needle.
- They can be round, flat and can be yellow (plane warts).
- Clusters of warts, spread over an area of skin (mosaic warts) are common on feet and hands.
DO’S AND DONT’S
To help prevent common warts:
- Don’t touch or pick at warts, including your own.
- Don’t use the same emery board, pumice stone or nail clipper on your warts as you use on healthy skin and nails. Use a disposable emery board.
- Don’t bite your fingernails or pick at hangnails.
- Groom with care. And avoid brushing, clipping or shaving areas that have warts.
- Avoid shared hot tubs, showers and warm baths. And don’t share washcloths or towels.
- Use hand moisturizer daily. This helps prevent dry, cracked skin.

Natural remedies can affect the body and may not suit everyone. At the start of treatment, some patients—especially with mental health or skin issues—may experience a temporary increase in symptoms. This may represent medicinal aggravation, indicating the body is responding, though symptoms may not be connected and simply coincidental. If they persist, contact us for support.
