Guillain-Barre syndrome is a rare neurological disorder that occurs when the body’s immune system suddenly and unexpectedly attacks the peripheral nervous system.
It’s most common in people over age 50 but can affect people of all ages.
It’s also slightly more common in males than females.
Weakness and tingling sensations in the hands and feet are usually the first symptoms that can get worse over a few hours, days or weeks and can quickly spread and may lead to paralysis.
In its most serious form, Guillain-Barre syndrome is a medical emergency and may require urgent treatment in a hospital. The sooner treatment is started, the better the chance of a complete recovery.
POSSIBLE CAUSES
- The exact cause is not known!
- Most people have symptoms of an infection (respiratory or gastrointestinal) in the six weeks before Guillain-Barre symptoms begin.
- It is the viral or bacterial infective disease of peripheral nerves.
- It can also be caused by illnesses, traumas, recent surgeries or vaccines.
SIGNS & SYMPTOMS
- A pins and needles feeling in the fingers, toes, ankles or wrists.
- Unsteady walk or not being able to walk or climb stairs.
- Trouble with facial movements, including speaking, chewing or swallowing.
- Double vision or inability to move the eyes.
- Severe pain that may feel achy, shooting or cramp like and may be worse at night.
- Trouble with bladder control or bowel function.
- Rapid heart rate.
- Low or high blood pressure.
- Respiratory failure – trouble breathing or dyspnoea particularly when lying flat.
- Choking on saliva.
- Loss of sensation
- Pain in the back
- Tingling or numbness in the distal part of the lower limbs (feet & legs) which gradually progresses upward (arms or face)
- Weakness in the proximal extremity muscles
- Loss of reflexes
- Occasionally quadriparesis (weakness in all the 4 extremities)
- Fatigue
- As it progresses, muscle weakness can turn into paralysis.
DO’S & DONT’S
- Careful monitoring of the respiratory function is essential
- Weakness in the extremities may require physiotherapy
- Oxygen may be required in severe cases.
- Diet should be rich in proteins
