Ischemia stands for less-than-normal amount of blood flow to part of your body. This lack of blood flow means your tissues aren’t getting the oxygen and other nutrients they need to work properly which may result in damage of the tissues.
Intestinal ischemia is a range of serious conditions when blood flow to the intestines (small as well as large) slows down or stops. That can make it hard for the intestines to work well and in severe cases it may lead to death.
Ischemic colitis or colonic ischemia happens when blood flow to part of the colon or large intestine is reduced.
It can affect any part of the colon, but this disorder most commonly causes pain on the left side of the belly area.
When symptoms happen on the right side of the belly its complications or the risks become higher.
