Common Symptoms of diaper rash include:

Possible Causes of diaper rash:
- Irritation of the skin by the diaper.
- Wearing wet or soiled diapers too long, if they’re contaminated with many stools or diarrhoea.
- Tightfitting diapers or clothing that rubs against the skin.
- Keeping the diaper area moist – not drying it properly.
- An allergic reaction from using new products such as different brand of baby wipes, diapers, a detergent, bleach or fabric softener used to wash cloth diapers.
- Lotions, powders and oils might also cause the problem.
- Developing a fungal, bacterial or yeast infection.
- Food allergies – As babies start to eat solid foods, this increases the likelihood of diaper rash. Changes in your baby’s diet can also increase the frequency of stools, which can lead to diaper rash.
- While breastfed babies can also have such rash in response to something the mother has eaten.
- Having sensitive skin.
- Antibiotics can contribute to a rash by killing bacteria that keep yeast growth in check also increases the risk of diarrhea.
- Excessive bathing.
- Any clothing that limits the circulation of air around the body.

- The rash has a yellowish color & is also present behind the ears or under the arms.
- The diaper area is covered with blisters that leave shallow red sores.
- The baby-boy’s penis is swollen, red & the foreskin cannot be retracted, or you notice a greenish discharge from the penis.
- A rash that’s severe or unusual.
- A rash that bleeds, itches or oozes.
- A rash that causes burning or pain when your baby passes urine or stool.
DO’S & DON’TS
- Keep the baby’s skin dry & clean.
- Change the baby’s diaper as soon as it becomes soiled.
- Wash the baby’s diaper in hot water and wash thoroughly using soap or bleach to remove all traces of stool.
- Let the baby be without diaper as for as possible.
- Use cotton under garments for the baby.
- Avoid plastic diaper covers which trap moisture.
- Use disposable diaper liners which allow the urine to pass through the diaper while keeping the body’s skin dry.
- At the first sign of redness, wash the body’s bottom with warm water & dry it thoroughly.
- Don’t use soap if that is causing irritation, wipe with baby oil instead.
- If the entire diaper area is red & irritated, the child may be allergic to the detergent – change it and see.
