Ecthyma is a serious form of impetigo that causes painful fluid- or pus-filled sores.
There are two types of impetigo:
- Non-bullous: The most common type.
- Bullous impetigo: Symptoms include large blisters called bullae, usually in areas where skin folds – trunk, arms and legs.
Common symptoms:
- Reddish sores on the face, especially around the nose and mouth and on the hands and feet.
- The sores can rupture, ooze, burst and develop honey-coloured crusts after few days.
- Mild itching and soreness.
Causes & Risk Factors
- Impetigo is caused by bacteria, usually staphylococci aureus or group A haemolytic streptococci organisms. The bacteria that cause impetigo often enter the skin through a small cut, insect bite or rash.
- Impetigo infections are more common in warm, humid weather.
- Children with other skin conditions, such as eczema (atopic dermatitis), are more likely to develop impetigo.
- Adults, who have diabetes or with a weakened immune system are also more likely to get it.
