Mumps is a viral infection of the salivary glands that mostly occurs in children under 15 years.
There are three pairs of major salivary glands — parotid, sublingual and submandibular. Each gland has its own duct or tube leading from the gland to the mouth.
Mumps usually affects parotid glands on each side of the face, that make saliva.
The peak season is late winter and spring. People who are not vaccinated are at high risk of infection.
Mumps spreads very easily for about five days after the swelling starts.
Common causes and Risk factors
- Mumps is caused by a virus in the saliva.
- Airborne droplet infection spread by sneezing & coughing
- One gets the virus by breathing in or by touching a surface where droplets have landed.
- It can also be spread by direct contact, such as kissing or sharing a water bottle etc.
COMMON SYMPTOMS
Symptoms of mumps show up about 2 to 3 weeks after exposure to the virus. Some may not have any symptoms at all or very mild symptoms. Initially there are symptoms like flu such as:
- Headache
- Muscle aches or pain.
- Not wanting to eat.
- Tiredness
- A common symptom of mumps is painful swelling on one or both sides of the face.
- Swollen, painful and tender glands beneath angle of lower jaw.
- Fever with sore throat
- Difficulty in opening mouth
- Difficulty in swallowing
- Swelling of one cheek and then the other or simultaneous both sides.
- Trouble eating or drinking.
- Confusion or disorientation.
- Stomach pain.
- Pain and swelling of the testicles
Further complications include:
- Orchitis – Testicular swelling and pain in young adults with a mumps infection after puberty. A swollen testicle may lead to a decrease in the size of the testicle and a decline in fertility.
- Oophoritis or swollen ovaries in girls after puberty, that can cause pain, upset stomach, vomiting and fever.
- Encephalitis is swelling or inflammation, in the brain. That can cause changes in consciousness, seizures and loss of muscle control.
- Meningitis is swelling, or inflammation, of the membranes around the brain and spinal cord.
- Hearing loss that usually gets better after the illness.
- Mumps can also damage the pancreas.
- Getting mumps during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy may increase the risk of miscarriage.
DO’S AND DONT’S
- Consume more liquids or semisolid diet easily to chew.
- Rest as much as possible.
- Maintain oral hygiene. Wash mouth frequently with lukewarm water.
- For testicular swelling, complete bed rest & ice compress to scrotum or a sling support for testicle is suggested.
- Use a cold or warm cloth over swollen salivary glands.
