Description

An abscess is a localized collection off pus results in response to infection or any foreign materials under the skin.

An abscess is a tender, easily pressed mass generally surrounded by a coloured area from pink to deep red.

It can occur anywhere in the body, but usually involves skin surface. The most common sites are armpits (axillae), areas around anus (perianal abscess), vagina (Bartholin gland abscess), the base of your spine (pilonidal), around a tooth (dental or gum abscess), and in your groin.

Boil is a localized pyogenic infection (pus formation).

Boil is a sort of localised skin infection that starts in a hair follicle or oil gland. If several boils appear in a group, this is a more serious type of infection called a carbuncle or furuncles. They are large, hard pimples with pus filled in centre.

They may appear at various places and are highly contagious. Boils are most common on the face, neck, chest, scalp, back, armpits, buttocks, groins and shoulders but may appear anywhere.

POSSIBLE CAUSES OF BOILS

Boils are caused by bacteria, named Staphylococcus aureus. These bacteria enter into the body through the hair follicle or small cuts on the skin. Boils are also caused due to blocked sweat glands.

Classification of the abscess

  • Pyaemia abscess – it occurs due to circulation of pyemic emboli in the blood.
  • Cold abscess – usually refers to tubercular abscess either due to involvement of lymph nodes or involvement of spine.

Common sites of abscess in the body-

Tooth Abscess

A tooth abscess is pus enclosed in the tissues of the jaw bone at the root of an infected tooth.

Abscesses typically originate from dead pulp tissue, usually caused by untreated tooth decay, cracked teeth or extensive periodontal disease.

A failed root canal treatment may also create a similar abscess.

It may also develop from bacteria entering a tooth filling and multiplying.

There are three types of dental abscess.

  1. A gingival abscess that involves only the gum tissue, without affecting either the tooth or the periodontal ligament.
  2. A periapical abscess starts in the dental pulp.
  3. A periodontal abscess begins in the supporting bone and tissue structures of the teeth.

Breast Abscess

A breast abscess is a painful collection of pus in the breast. Breast abscesses are painful, swollen lumps that may also be red, feel hot, cause the surrounding skin to swell, cause a fever.

Breast abscesses are often linked to mastitis, a condition that causes breast pain and inflammation, and usually affects women who are breastfeeding.

Anorectal abscess

Also known as an anal / rectal abscess, or perianal / perirectal abscess, is an abscess adjacent to the anus.

Perianal abscesses can be seen in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (such as Crohn’s disease) or diabetes.

This often presents itself as a lump of tissue near the anus which grows larger and more painful with time.
