ATHEROSCLEROSIS is a specific type of arteriosclerosis where there is a clot formation or atheroma in the arteries.
It is a potentially serious condition where arteries become clogged with fatty substances such as fats, cholesterol, calcium crystals and other substances are called plaques, or atheroma.
The plaque can cause arteries to narrow, blocking blood flow, making them weak and sometimes burst.
Although atherosclerosis is often considered a heart problem, it can affect arteries anywhere in the body and the fragments of plaque can detach.
Heart attacks are generally caused by such blood clots, whereas strokes are more often caused by plaque fragments or gradual obstruction.
Accumulation of plaque can also lead to an aneurysm – the bulging and rupturing of a blood vessel, causing internal bleeding.
Unfortunately, because arterial plaque has no outward symptoms and signs, the condition is often discovered too late – with devastating consequences.
A routine blood test for C-reactive protein (CRP) can reveal inflammation and potential plaque dangers.
Patients can be examined usually through tongue that appears purplish with bulging veins underneath and pulse choppy, which indicates obstruction of blood flow.
