The heart is divided into two sides by a muscular wall called the septum.
The heart has four chambers: the right atrium and left atrium (upper chambers) and the right ventricle and left ventricle (lower chambers). Each chamber has a valve to keep blood flowing in one direction.
The heart’s chambers work together to pump blood throughout the body:
- The left ventricle is the strongest pump, with thicker muscles that contract to force oxygen-rich blood throughout the body via the aortic valve.
- Left atrium: Receives oxygen-rich blood from the lungs.
- Right ventricle: Pumps oxygen-poor blood to the lungs through the pulmonary valve.
- Right atrium: Receives oxygen-poor blood from the body through the superior vena cava and inferior vena cava.
The mitral valve is a flap of tissue in the heart that controls blood flow between the left atrium and left ventricle: it opens to allow blood to flow from the atrium to the ventricle and closes to prevent blood from flowing back into the atrium.
The upper left heart chamber is called the left atrium while the bottom left chamber is called the left ventricle.
Mitral valves regurgitation or incompetence is one of the most common types of cardiac valves disorder where the valve leaks and blood flows backward into the atrium and the valve between the left heart chambers doesn’t close fully. This makes it harder for the heart to work properly.

The condition is often mild and develops slowly. The symptoms develop over time and may include:
