Description

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic disease of the central nervous system, affecting the fatty sheath that covers nerve fibers in the brain and spinal cord – it is a serious disorder that causes breakdown of the protective covering of nerves.

This sheath, called myelin, normally insulates the nerve fibers, allowing nerve impulses to move swiftly and efficiently between brain, spinal cord, and rest of the body. Myelin can be compared to the insulation coating on electrical wires.

In MS, the destruction of this insulating material and its replacement by scar tissue slow or block nerve signals, disrupting communication between the brain and the body.

The disease mostly begins between the ages of 20 and 40.

Common Causes & Risk Factors:

No known specific cause, some possibilities may include:

  • An autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks the body’s own myelin cells. Patients with the history of these autoimmune disease are at more risk: thyroid disorders, pernicious anaemia, psoriasis, type 1 diabetes or inflammatory bowel disease – IBD.
  • Mold or general toxic exposure
  • Emotional stress
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Vitamin D deficiency or less exposure to natural sunlight.
  • Certain food allergies
  • Immunization
  • Women are 2 to 3 times more likely than men.
  • Family history or inherited.
  • Certain viral infections have been linked to MS, including Epstein-Barr that causes infectious mononucleosis.
  • People who are obese or were obese in childhood have an increased risk of multiple sclerosis.
  • Smoking
  • Patients with MS may have a different gut microbiome than people who don’t have MS.

Common Symptoms & Complications of MS depend on the person, the location of damage in the nervous system and how bad the damage is to the nerve fibers thus vary widely but the most common symptoms include:

  • Blurred or double vision
  • Partial or complete loss of vision, usually in one eye at a time.
  • Lack of coordination
  • Loss of balance
  • Severe weakness or paralysis, typically in the arms or legs.
  • Unbearable Pains
  • Muscles Weakness, spasticity or stiffness.
  • Impairment of senses
  • Tremor
  • Speech disturbances – slurred
  • Bladder and bowel dysfunction
  • Fatigue / severe weakness
  • Euphoria
  • Sexual dysfunction
  • Numbness or tingling.
  • Electric-shock sensations
  • Trouble with walking or not being able to walk at all.
  • Dizziness
  • Vertigo – a false sense that you or your surroundings are moving.
  • Cognitive abnormalities – troubles with memory, thinking and understanding information.
  • Mood changes, such as depression, anxiety, or mood swings.
  • Occasionally Seizures.

Good diet for MS

  • Unprocessed foods– Choose whole, organic, unprocessed foods as often as possible. spinach, kale, cucumbers, broccoli and cabbage etc. or made from wheat and soy.
  • Coconut Oil & Olive oils – coconut oil contains medium chain fatty acids that support the brain and nervous system. Use extra-virgin olive oil as your main fat.
  • Fresh fruits and vegetables– Aim for a variety of colours to provide antioxidants that can help prevent free radical damage.
  • Cabbage and bean sprouts– Foods high in lecithin may help strengthen the nerves, found in soybeans; may be linked to better heart, brain health and fighting high levels of cholesterol.
  • Eat organic, wild sockeye salmon – rich in proteins and good omega-3 fats. One serving per week goes a long way toward improving health in multiple sclerosis by providing healthy fats that decrease inflammation.

Foods to Avoid

  • Processed foods– Reduce your exposure to chemicals and toxins by avoiding any foods that are processed.
  • Gluten– People with MS generally have a gluten-intolerance that can make symptoms worse.
  • Potential food allergens– Allergens can make MS symptoms worse, avoid any foods you might be allergic to.
  • Sugar– Lowers the immune response and causes systemic inflammation and premature aging.
  • Eliminate milk and milk products, substituting other calcium sources.
  • Alcohol– Increases inflammation and can create a toxic environment.
  • Avoid hydrogenated oils, margarine and deep-fried foods.
  • STOP, STOP, drinking any type of soda – The carbonation acts in the body as a waste product that must be detoxified.
  • Stop using the microwave – Irradiated food isn’t healthy!

Natural remedies can affect the body and may not suit everyone. At the start of treatment, some patients—especially with mental health or skin issues—may experience a temporary increase in symptoms. This may represent medicinal aggravation, indicating the body is responding, though symptoms may not be connected and simply coincidental. If they persist, contact us for support.
