Raynaud’s phenomenon, or Raynaud’s disease, is a condition that causes decreased blood flow to the extremities — such as fingers, toes or nose, lips and ears etc., — to feel extremely cold, numb and discoloured.
It is a kind of peripheral vascular disturbance consisting of spasmodic contraction of digital arteries – usually smaller arteries (blood vessels) that supply blood to the skin narrow or shrunk, called vasoconstriction.
The condition affects mostly young women than men, usually around the age of 30.
It is not generally a serious condition, but in very severe cases it could lead to tissues death.
The obliteration may result in thrombosis, ischemic changes in the skin of the digits and nails, superficial necrosis, skin ulcers and finally gangrene.
- Primary Raynaud’s: The most common type, with no known cause
- Secondary Raynaud’s: Due to another underlying health issue, such as a connective tissue disease or an autoimmune disorder like SLE lupus, scleroderma, rheumatoid arthritis or Sjogren syndrome etc.
Common Symptoms of Raynaud’s disease:
- Usually bilateral disorder i.e., both sides of the body
- Mostly affects the fingers than the toes.
- Tingling and burning sensations
- The numbness as if affected parts have “fallen asleep”.
- Sensitivity to cold.
- Pallor of the skin if the limb is bloodless.
- Skin colour changes to white due to lack of blood flow.
- Cyanosis occurs if the blood flow is sluggish and there is excessive deoxygenation – the affected area turns blue.
- Throbbing pain with redness as blood flow returns
- Redness occurs in some cases due to reactive hyperaemia which may follow the vasospasm.
- Painful, slow-healing sores may occur in the fingertips.
- Prickly feeling or stinging pain upon warming or stress relief.
Possible causes of Raynaud’s disease.
- Usually triggered by cold temperatures.
- Disorders of connective tissue, especially systemic sclerosis.
- Obliterative arterial diseases.
- Emotional issues like stress, anxiety, nervousness or being overexcited.
- Excess intake of caffeine and smoking – narrow and hardened blood vessels.
- Poor circulation due to heart disease.
- Anaemia or insufficient blood
- Prolonged work with vibrating equipment such as jackhammers etc.
- Typists of piano players
- Underactive or low thyroid function.
- Arteriosclerosis – arteries disease
- Deficiency of certain minerals like magnesium.
- Use of certain medicines such as beta blockers for high blood pressure or chemotherapy drugs for cancer, ADHD and migraine medicines etc.
- Diseases of blood vessels.
- Carpal tunnel syndrome.
- Smoking narrows blood vessels.
- Injuries to the hands or feet.
- More common in people who live in colder climates.
- Family history. Having a parent, sibling or child with the disease appears to increase the risk of primary Raynaud’s.
PREVENTION – DO’S & DONT’S
- Protection or avoiding the cold.
- Stop smoking.
- Wearing gloves

Natural remedies can affect the body and may not suit everyone. At the start of treatment, some patients—especially with mental health or skin issues—may experience a temporary increase in symptoms. This may represent medicinal aggravation, indicating the body is responding, though symptoms may not be connected and simply coincidental. If they persist, contact us for support.
